HI DE HI!

STRANGE SALUTING ORDER

LONDON, March 18. A strange story was told in the House of Commons to-day by _Mi' McGhee (Lab.) about a commanding officer who ordered the men of his battalion to spring to attention when they met officers and shout “Hi de hi.” The officers had to reply by shouting “ Ho de ho.” The battalion became known in the district as the “Flanagan and Allen” battalion. Children who met soldiers shouted “Hi de hi,” whereupon the soldiers did not know whether to spring to attention or not. Sometimes when the commanding officer saw men approaching him he would shout “Hi de hi” first. If they did not spring to attention they were confined to barracks.

Major Hendeijson, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for War, told Mr McGhee that the officer had been suspended from his command.
