WATERFRONT POLICY
WELLINGTON UNION MEETING
WELLINGTON, April 6
Permission for a meeting having been granted by the Waterfront Commission, the Wellington branch of the Watersiders’ Union held a four hours’ stop-work meeting today, at which it decided on a policy aimed at assisting in the elimination of the inefficiency and abuses that exist in the industry, fuller cooperation with the Waterfront Control Commission, and speedier loading and discharging of vessels. An official statement issued said that recognition was taken of the fact that a general election would be held this year, and of statements at a recent meeting of the Harbour Board that the men were working only half a gang at a time. While it was realised that these statements were untrue, the position was placed before the members so that a policy could be devised of co-operating with the Control Commission, and assisting in eliminating inefficiency and abuses that existed in the industry. The statement also said that permission for the meeting having been granted by the Commission, members wished to inform the people of Wellington that greater improvement would be shown by the workers in industry, and that had been the policy of the union for the past two years. Their efforts were directed entirely towards the defeat of Fascism. The four hours allotted to the meeting would be more than compensated for by the policy devised to-day.
