DECLINE AT GREYMOUTH Indicative of the contraction of trade as a result of war conditions, the Customs returns for the port of Greymouth generally’ show marked declines for March and the first quai'ter of the year as compared with the similar period of 1942. Exceptions are “war expenses, sales tax” and “war expenses, other,!’ which items have advanced sharply. Details are as follow, the figures for 1942 being given in parentheses:— , , March: Customs, £3791/19/11 (£4257/11/6); beer, £2057/17/5 (£2334/13/6); sales tax, £3949/19/2 (£3482/12/1); gold, £3365/5/10 (£3966/10/11); petrol, £1776/10/6 (£lBOO/8/6); war expenses, sales tax, £7612/16/3 (£3485/7/11); war expenses and other, £7196/11/6 (£6184/10/6); total. £29,795 (£25,632/18/6). First quarter: Customs, £8966/13/4 (£10,479715/-); beer, £5319/8/10 (£6771/17/9); sales tax, £8426/10/5 (£B2BB/15/6); gold, £10,603/3/3 (£12,483/14/7); petrol, £4059/9/6 (£4339/2/6); war expenses, sales tax, £15,442/0/9 (£8384/12/7); war expenses, other, £20,722/2/6 (£lB,808/10/1); total, £73,948/14/10 (£69,603/14/8).
