WOMEN IN SYNOD
SOUTH AFRICAN PROPOSAL
JOHANNESBURG, May 10. A proposal to admit women as members of the Synod was adopted at' the sitting of the Cape Town Diocesan Synod, reports a correspondent of the Johannesburg Star. Bishop S. W. Lavis moved that the [Synod "Approves of the principle of admitting women as representatives at provincial and diocesan synods, and desires the provincial standing committee to submit a bill to give effect to this proposal at the next provincial synod.” There were an increasing number of people who thought it was a reflection on the synod’s intelligence that women were not admitted as I members, although some people .thought the other way, he said. It would be a pity if the Church were Ito be the last ditch of prejudice against letting women take their rightful places in church affairs. The Archbishop of Cape Town pointed out that to-day the Army was using the services of women in manv capacities with great success. If St. Paul were to rewrite his epistles today he would alter some of his language, in view of the difference between the position a woman of his day was able to fill and the position an educated woman could fill to-day.
