PERSONAL NOTES

The Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall), attended by Captain H. G. Helmore, A.D.C., inspected troops in the Wairarapa district, yesterday.

Mr. H. A. Robinson returned yesterday, from Auckland.

Mr. and Mrs. G. Sutherland left, yesterday, on a visit to Hanmer.

Captain A. R. Curtis, Sub-Area Officer at Greymouth, will leave this evening, for Christchurch.

Mr. N. C. Barstow, Christchurch, branch manager of the South British Insurance Company, arrived yesterday, on a visit to Greymouth.

The engagement is announced of Thelma Catherine, second daughter of Mr and Mrs S. Williams, Taylorville, to Norman James, second son of Mr and Mrs N. J. Gibson, Dobson.

Rev. Dr. Harrison, who has been assistant parish priest at Hokitika for several years, will leave on March 1, on transfer to Christchurch. He will be replaced at Hokitika by Rev. Father G. O’Meeghan.

Guests at Revingtons Hotel include: Mrs. N. Shaw, Miss Shaw (Auckland); Mr. J. Hunter, junr., Mr. V. Salisbury, Mr. N. C. Barstone, Mr. E. M. Pearce, Mr. W. Furneaux (Christchurch), Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Wells (Hastings), Mr. D. P. Berry (Fielding), Mr. H. V. Vale (Hastings).

To fill the vacancy caused by the resignation last November of Dr. J. Stone, professor of law at the Auckland University College, the council has decided to appoint Dr. A. G. Davis to the position. Dr. Stone resigned from the chair of law in Auckland to take up an appointment in Australia. Graduating as a Bachelor of Laws at Auckland University in 1922, Dr. Davis left New Zealand in 1928, and was lecturing in the London School of Economics and Hull University College for some time. During the last four years he has lectured to the University of Wales. Dr. Davis is already en route to New Zealand, and is expected to take up his duties shortly.—P.A.
