LAKE BRUNNER NOTES
[our own correspondent.] Ideal weather prevailed during the week-end for picnics held in this district. On Saturday a party of Greymouth nurses spent the day in the vicinity of Moana. Launches were not available, so sailing and rowing boats were used. The Moana and Ruru Women’s Institute and friends held their annual picnic at Rotomanu, the journey being made by train. Employees of United Sawmills at Te Kinga and Hohonu Bush, accompanied by their wives and families, held a picnic at the latter place on Saturday, upwards of 100 persons being present. The sports events included chopping and sawing, run--1 ning, swimming, tug-of-war, naildriving, stepping competition, and ■ guessing length of pole. In the chop- ’ ping and sawing events honours appeared to be about even between the ■ Te Kinga and Bush teams. In the tug- ' of-war the To Kinga team won the men’s events from the Bush team, ’ while the Te Kinga women defeated 1 the Bush tug-of-war team. Refreshments included ice-cream. Those who rendered excellent service included Messrs R. Dixon (children’s events), W. McDairmid and P, Heeny (chopping and sawing) C. Hooker, R. Ab- ' boil, D. Steele, and Mrs T. Eger ton. ' Owing to the large nuniber of residents having left the district, it has been found necessary by several clubs ■ and other organisations to amend their executives. The Moana Regatta Club now consists of the following: Messrs : VV. Williams (chairman), L. A. Lewton (secretary), B. Downie, H. Feary and C. Kennedy. This club has now completed the extension giving access to the Moana wharf. The timber supplied by the Grey County Council and the labour was voluntarily provided by club members and local residents. A creditable structure has resulted. A series of sailing races extending over six week-ends is now in progress, the fifth race places being as follow: —Majestic (C. Brown) 1; Mystic (H. Feary) 2; Make (P. McDonald) 3. Other competitors were: Vicuna (D. Cronin), Kia Ora (H. Taylor), Hinau (C. Hines). A meeting held during the past week for the purpose of reforming the Moana Domain Board resulted in the following being elected:—Messrs J. White (chairman), C. Richardson (secretary), F. Klempel, H. Taylor, W. Williams, and R. Dense. At a meeting of the E.P.S. held at Moana, about 30 members were enrolled. Through a fall from a horse a few clays ago, Geoffrey Kennedy, aged seven, son of Mr and Mrs C. Kennedy, of Ruru, sustained a compound fracture of the left arm. He was removed to the Grey ’Hospital, where he is still a patient.
