[OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, July 16. The monthly meeting of the Hokitike School Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs A. C. Armstrong (chairman), L. Graham (hon. secretary), B. King, J, Lawrence, W. E. Richards, A. Leslie, and J. Laing, The chairman referred to the bereavement suffered by - the treasurer (Mr J. Laing), and moved a vote of condolence, which was carried, the members standing in silence. From the Children’s War Effort Committee of the Canterbury Education Board, making an apneal for children to give 1/- per head to provide Christmas parcels for soldiers.— It was resolved that the children organise a bottle-drive to obtain funds. The , Canterbury Education Board wrote stating that the manual training room at the school is to be renovated- , , . Mr H. Brown, schoolmaster, Timaru, wrote asking for use of school building to house a party of children during the August holidays.—The request'was granted.

Accounts amounting to £32/5/4 were presented and passed'for payment. The headmaster (Mr Batt) reported that the school roll was just under 400. The attendance was still baaiv affected through sickness among the children. Authority was given to procure a first-aid outfit for the infant school. With 40 years’ service in which he has been a church worker on Vestry, choirmaster, lay reader, church secretary and Synodsman, Mr J. B. Ward has established a record. Opportunity was taken last night at . a social gathering of All Saints Church people to show their appreciation to Mr Ward for his long and faithful service. There was a large attendance, and tributes were paid by the Vicar (Rev. H. A. Childs) and the church wardens (Messrs D. H. Thomas and W. E. Richards). The Vicar, on behalf of the congregation, presented Mr Ward with an easy chair, a pair of slippers, a book, and an envelope containing notes, and expressed the wish that Mr Ward will be spared many to continue his good work. Mr Ward, in ex** pressing his thanks, said the work had been a labour of love.
