The recent formation of the West Coast Federation of Pig Clubs has drawn attention to the benefits individual clubs have conferred on pig. breeders in their respective districts. The success that can accrue from breeding from approved pedigree lines, instead of from pigs of unknown ancestry, has been demonstrated by the clubs, and in some parts of the Westland district results have been obtained that would compare more than favourably with other parts of the Dominion. For instance, a Large White pedigree pig at Barrytown, during the present season, produced a, litter of 12 pigs, of which 10 survived. At three weeks, the combined weight of the litter was 129 lbs., an average of T 2.9 lbs._ and at eight weeks, the combined weight was 436 lbs, an excellent figure. Another pedigree pig in the same district produced a litter of 11, of which eight survived. At three weeks the combined weight was 138 lbs., an average of 13.8 lbs and at eight weeks the ' total had risen to 371 lbs., another excellent return.
Ways and means of advancing piping and Highland dancing on the West Coast were considered at a meeting held on Thursday evening in Perotti Hall, there being a good attendance. The Greymouth PipeBand has now taken over the affairs of the West Coast Centre of the New Zealand Piping and Dancing Association. It was suggested that competitions be held on two or three days in August, if the proposed dates do not clash with competitions in Canterbury. It was reported that medals had already been donated or promised. A further meeting is to be held next month.
