A cablegram from Saigon announced the death of Cambodia’s King. Siosowath Monovong, aged 66, at the Royal Palace, Phnompenh.
A London cablegram stated that a seaman, M. J. B. Coulston, of Auckland, who was taken from the steajner Brisbane last year, is imprisoned at Bordeaux.
A Cairo Press message states that Major-General O’Connor, Avho 'was recently taken prisoner by the Italians, and Lieutenant-Colonel Combe, have been located in Central Italy.—Official Wireless.
Mr. E. McKenzie, who has resigned from the position of secretary of the Wairarapa Rugby Union, after 29 years’ service, has been elected a life member of that union. At the annual meeting of the union reference was made to his work as sole New Zealand selector, to his prowess as a former Rugby representative, and to his services as an official of the New Zealand Rugby Union.
A statement that he did not wish to make any announcement at present was made by the Minister for Defence (Mr. Jones), when asked whether the Government had decided to extend the term of the Chief of the General Staff (Major-General Sir John Duigan), or whether it was considering a fresh appointment. Sir John has held the appointment since April, 1937, his term being extended in April of last year for a further 12 months, aftei’ an extension had previously been made in 1939.—Press Assn.

The first Polish Consul-General to be appointed to New Zealand, Professor K. Wodzicki, has arrived in Auckland from London on his way to Wellington, where he will take up office. Professor Wodzicki, who is accompanied by his wife and their two children, was formerly professor of biology at Warsaw University College of Agriculture. He intends to combine with his official duties some research work, particularly on stock-breeding in which he is interested. Before he was offered the post of Consul-Gen-eral he was invited to visit New Zealand by the authorities at Massey College.—Press Association.
The death occurred last evening of Mr. William Patterson, of Reefton, at the age of 65 years, after a short illness. A native of Reefton, he was fourth son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Patterson, and was known in his earlier days as an athlete and a footballer, and was a member of Reefton Fire Brigade. For the past 28 years deceased had been farming at Inangahua Landing. He leaves a wife two sons, and a daughter. He is also survived by three . sisters, Mesdames Doig (Totara Flat), and Dyson (Auckland) and Miss K. Patterson (Reefton), and by six brothers, John (Wellington), Robert (Westport), James (Reefton), Hugh (Gisborne), Harry (Foxton) and Thomas (Greymouth).
