TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping

MEETINGS TQ COME.

March 20, 22— Manawatu. March 22, 24—Bay of Plenty. March 22, 24 —Oamaru. March 27, 29 —Hawke’s Bay. Sir Beau:

It was stated at Trentham on Saturday that Sir Beau was under offer to India at 2000 guineas.

A Big Improvement: White Rajah, who won the concluding race at Trentham, is in the same stable as Augment. He was prominent for part of the trip in the Thompson Handicap, but finished about last. His form at Carterton prior to the Trentham meeting was poor, poor. In Blinkers: Ever England, who was heavily supported when he made a successful debut at Trentham, raced in blinkers, or in the hoodlike contrivance which is passed as blinkers in New Zealand. He was backed with confidence, and was third favourite in a field of 14. The Best: Premature, the best two-year filly, and possibly the best of either sex this season, was not catalogued at the 1940 yearling sales. She was retained to carry the colours of her breeder, Mr G. M. Currie. The Koatanui studmaster has most of his horses trained at Wanganui, but Premature is in G. New’s stable at Awapuni. Rakanui: The Trentham Champion Hack Handicap winner, Rakanui, is a four-year-old gelding by Hunting Song— Golden Opportunity, by Psychology— Oreum, by King John —Desert Gold. Rakanui has not done much racing, but has won five times in thirteen starts. Saturday’s was his first success over a middle distance, but he has previously tackled only the sprints. A New T rain er: R. Wilson will shortly set up as a public trainer at Riccarton, he having leased the house and boxes formerly used by A. J. Martin. Wilson has had about 20 years’ experience, chiefly with trotters,, and was for some years head man for J. S. Shaw. He will start off at Riccarton with the bay Corriet gelding, Golden Sight, who showed aptitude for jumping last Winter. A Brilliant Juvenile: Mr Charles Vixen, the owner of the crack filly All Love, is said to take little interest in racing, and has never seen her race. So far the filly has .won £5330 in stakes. E. Bartie, who rode All Love in the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington, states that he cannot recall a two-year-old with •such a long stride as All Love. “I think she must be nearly as big a strider as High Caste,” he said, “Twice she stretched out so far that I did not think she was ever coming down.” Beau Pere: It was stated when Beau Pere left Australia that he had been leased to Mr L. B. Mayer, and was to return from America in time for next stud season. Reports from the United States, however, affirm that he has been sold at 100,000 dollars, equivalent to about £30,000 in Australian currency. Whether this is correct remains to be seen, but it may be significant that Mr W. J. Smith (Australian owner of Beau Pere) recently bought Ajax and Manitoba. The first crop of Australian-sired youngsters by Beau Pere are two years old, but none has done anything distinctive so far this season.

Unlucky: According to some opinions, Phoines was unlucky to suffer defeat in the Newmarket Handicap. On his track work he was regarded as next door to a certainty. He fell when doing a gallop at Caulfield and this caused a setback in his preparation. Phoines was credited with running five furlongs at Flemington in 58sec. This phenomenal gallop on the eve of the meeting is said to have sent Phoines back a bit. He is a four-year-old gelding by Windbag from Message, by Marconigram—Mascot, by Martian from Mary of Argyle. Mascot won the, Auckland Cup and Canterbury ’Cup\ and is a sister to Ardenvhor, a winner of the New Zealand Cup.

BEAU VITE FIT. SYDNEY, March 13. Mr. Ralph Stewart, owner of Beau Vite is satisfied that his horse will be fit to show his form at the Rosehill meeting on Saturday week. Mr. Stewart would have preferred him to have a race before his meeting with High Caste and other good horses, but overlooked entering him for a suitable race. Beau Vite is now forward enough to give a good showing when he meets good company.

Beau Vite pleased track watchers at Randwick to-day. He galloped on the tan track from the nine furlongs post to the three-furlongs post in 1.18, which was comparatively good time. He ran the first five furlongs in 1.4. Proud Fox was not sent against the watch. r

High Caste went over five furlongs on the course proper in 1.5. Tidal Wave, who will not start in the Sydney Cup, but is a definite starter in the St. Leger, equalled High Caste’s time over the same journey.

Trotting

MEETINGS TO COME.

March 22.—Westland (at Greymouth) March 27, 29.—Wellington. March 29. —Cambridge.

Final Reminder: Acceptances for the Westland meeting close at nine o’clock to-night.

A Spell: Helenora, owned by W. R. Coburn, has broken down, and has been treated to a spell.

Change of Stables: Storm Signal, formerly trained by G. Cameron, is now in W. R. Butt’s stable. Butt will race Storm Signal, Dawn Grattan and Compris at Greymouth on Saturday.

For Wellington: Among the nominations for the Wellington Trotting Club meeting to be held on March 27 and 29 are the following West Coasters: Oxford Scholar, Lough Derg, Guy Whispers, all three trained by C. K. Yeatman at Grey mouth.

/Plentiful: |' Plentiful has been showing a good I deal of speed in his work as an un'‘hoppled trotter at Victoria Park. He will have his first race in that division on Saturday. Civil Officer has been working more kindly of late for T. P. Lalor, though he has hardly been displaying, his former speed. The Realm geld;ing has proved a real problem.

Futurity Stakes: The following three-year-olds remain in the Futurity Stakes of £lOOO, one mile and five furlong's, after the declaration of final forfeits: Gold Chief, Special Force, Ronald Logan, Festivity, Walter Moore, Peter’s Find, Shadow Maid, Surprise Potts, Ngarimu,' b.c. by Quite Sure-Sundock, b.g. by Jack Potts-Ross Logan. The stakes will be run at the Ashburton meeting on April 5. Hot Favourite Beaten:

Guinea Gold was backed as a certainty for the Wyndham Juvenile Stakes, but after being one of the leaders all the way to the straight he was outstayed by the little-fancied Punctual, who finished strongly wide out. Punctual is a gelding by Quite SureSea Mist. He paid a win dividend of over a third a century. A Race Record:

Pleasant Guy won the Wyndham Trotting Cup in convincing style, and her time of 4.27 was two seconds better than the previous race record of 4.29 held jointly by Margaret Bell (1935) and Donald Dhu (1938). Pleasant Guy, who is by Adioo Guy-Pleas-ant Drive, took the lead after half a mile had been edvered, and was not afterwards headed. She looks to be headed for the best classes. Useful Pair:

J. B. Pringle will race Channel Fleet and Shaun Aroon at Greymouth on Saturday. Channel Fleet is one of the ruling favourites, with Nationalist for the principal event. Shaun Aroon, recently converted to a trotting gait, had his first .start among the unhoppled brigade at the Kaikoura meeting, and ran third to Windsor Lad and Sea Wolf. As he is by Wrack, Shaun Aroon should soon become a useful trotter. He is a full brother, to Stormtost. As Well as Anything: Four Square has been pacing as

well as anything at Victoria Park, and B. Thomson has the Acron gelding in fine order. He also has Royal Travis ready to race on Saturday. This Travis Axworthy gelding was a very close fourth at his last start, Distributor, Durability, and Chameleon finishing in front of him over the eight and a-half furlongs of the Paparoa Handicap, at Victoria Park, on January 6, with two lengths and a head separating the first four horses, in a great finish. Over Two Miles: G. P. Thomson has been working Chameleon over longer journeys at the Park, and she is to make her debut on Saturday over two miles. She worked two miles on Sunday in 4.45, going easily all the way. A brilliant sprinter, this Travis Axworthy mare has yet to prove herself over a journey, but there will be many to support her confidently on Saturday. G. P. Thomson also has Kate Bingen working with all her old dash. She,has been given a lot of steady work and appears to have overcome her pulling habits. Her recent work has been impressive. Yeatman’s Team:

Oxford Scholar and Purina, the stars of C. K. Yeatman’s team at Victoria Park, are in excellent order for the meeting on. Saturday next. Oxford Scholar has been doing all his work in his usual accomplished style, and provided he can be induced to begin correctly he looks sure to get some of the money. Purina has fined down considerably since she last raced, and this fine beginner and proved stayer should soon be back to her best race form. Her brilliant finishing effort in the last race on the 'second day of the last Greymouth meeting gave promise of an* early -return. Lough Derg and Guy Whispers are two others of Yeatman’s string who are in good fettle, especially the latter-, who is bearing a very bright and racy appearance.
