MOTOR IMPORTS
SHARP DECLINE SHOWN A drop of more than £3,000,000 in the dutiable value of motor-vehicles imported into New Zealand during 1940, as compared with the imports for the previous year, is shown in a return furnished by the Comptroller of Customs. The total number of vehicles imported during 1940 was 6151, and the value, £988,622. The corresponding figures for the previous 12 months were 25,096 and £4,188,776. The United Kingdom again supplied the greatest number of cars and car chassis, imports from there being 4828, the values of which totalled £710,299. The total number of this type of vehicle imported was 5040, worth £745,554. Of the 1111 commercial vehicles worth £243,068 imported during 1940, Canada supplied 670, the value being £121,549. The only other country to supply vehicles in any number was America, which exported to New Zealand 346 vehicles of all kinds, worth £69,511. Motor imports from all countries landed at Auckland during 1940 totalled 979, the dutiable value of which aggregated £160,016, as compared with 3244 (£545,698) during 1939.
The figures quoted represent the current domestic values in the countries of export, plus 10 per cent, expressed in terms of New Zealand currency.
