NOTES ON THE RACING.

SOME CLOSE FINISHES

[special to “star.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, December 14. The meeting at Hororata was most successful, and some of the closest finishes ever seen on the course were staged. Lockit Destroyed: The principal event, the H. A. Knight Memorial Handicap, was won well by Knight Commander., who showed a belated return to his last year’s form. Skyrena finished fast to cut the veteran Waitaka out of second money, with the disappointing Glenora Boy a fair fourth. The favourite Symbol ran herself out by going with Epic in front during the middle stages, and she did not last long in the iun home. The race was marred by an unfortunate mishap to Lockit, who, when going well about half a mne from home, broke a fetlock, and had to be destroyed. He had not won a race for some time, but had done well of late and was expected to race prominently at the Manawatu meeting. He was owned by Messrs. D. E. Wanklyn and A. T. Donnelly.

Scarteen’s Success: The middle distance race, the Hororata Hack Handicap, provided an interesting contest, and was won oy Vintage’s brother, Scarteen, who had not figured as a winner since his two victories at Dunedin 12 months ago. He has lately shown signs of respiratory trouble, but this did not seem to affect him to-day as he won going away in good time. Iceland Spar, who found difficulty in handling the many corners on the track, put in some solid work when the straight was reached, and secured second place from Gay Thread, a three-year-old colt by Lord Quex from Seamstress, who is likely to be more in evidence later in the season. Gay Parade, who acted as pacemaker for a good way, was a close fourth in front of Fernby. Shanghai Lily and Princess Minerva shaped poorly.

IX Neck Verdict: . There were only four starters m the Bangor Highweight Handicap, and in a close finish between Princess Minerva and Dranoel, the former, as the result of superior horsemanship, gained a neck verdict. Elmarch was a fair third, six lengths in front ot Ageratum. An Easy Win: > ■ The Trial Plate, for horses that have not won a race exceeding £4O in value, proved to be an easy proportion for the second choice, Circular Note, who, slow away on this occasion, finished too solidly for the young Iliad filly Erambie, who was having her first race, and was in the lead for most of the journey. Master Flash, who was a surprise favourite, was third m front of Gold Nugget and Citizen.

Exciting Finish: The Novice Stakes, for non-winners, provided the most exciting finish of the day. Sweet Mystery headed oft the favourite, Lockheed, in the straight, when Greenbank anci Rightshift put in late claims. A half-head verdict went to Greenbank, from Nightshift, who beat Sweet Mystery by a similar margin, with Lockheed a neck away. Greenbank is a four-vear-old gelding by Paladin from Universal, a half-sister by Arrow- > smith to Queen of Song.

All the Way: Synthetic wenj; to the front early in the Sandown Hack Handicap, and stayed there to tfye end, but he was all out to' hold off' Gold Don, who had him well beaten in a stride past the post. Gold Don came with a late run to get within half a head of the winner, and two lengths away, Lord Midas beat Papernilla by a similar margin. Raceaway, the' favourite, followed Synthetic into the straight, but failed to carry on. Pfiilibun was in keen demand, but was never in a likely position. Sham Boy was hopelessly left.

Trotting Events: z Aurie’s Star, first choice for the Glendore Handicap, justified her posiJ tion by a fairly comfortable win. She 'was always handy, and drew to the I front early in the run home. Glenlee ran into second place nearing the post, and easily accounted for the third horse Boreas. Crackajack and Malapert failed to go away. i Boreas improved by winning the [.Snowdon Handicap in an effortless imanner. He followed Shuffle and Indian Clipper into the straight and soon overhauled them. Indian Clipper gained second place from Warwick, with Burt Scott close up. An ini quiry was held into Indian Clipper’s display as compared with that in the [previous race, but no action was taken.
