A Washington cablegram stated that Mr. Roosevelt has nominated the Un-der-Secretary of Agriculture (Mr, Claude Wickard) to-succeed Mr. Wallace, as Secretary for Agriculture.

The engagement is announced of Richard George, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pilling of Dunedin to Beryl Myrtle, daughter of Lt. Colonel C. E. and Mrs. Butcher, Greymouth.

Advice that Lieutenant-Command-er C. J. West, of Mount Maunganui, Tauranga, has been appointed to command one of His Majesty's ships in the Far East has been received by Mrs. West. Lieutenant-Commander West, who for some years has been chairman of the Mount Maunganui Town Board, served in the last war and left some time ago to rejoin the Royal Navy—Press Assn.

Hon. D. Wilson, Leader of the Legislative Council and associate Minister for National Service, & will leave Wellington this morning on a tour of part of the North Island to meet representatives of local bodies to discuss the formation of the emergency reserve corps, which includes the home guard. He will attend meetings in Masterton, Napier, Gisborne, Whakatane, New Plymouth, Hawera and Wanganui, returning to Wellington next Tuesday.—Press Association.
