WELLINGTON, June 12.
The executive of .the New Zealand Rugby Union this afternoon decided that the practice being followed by some unions in allowing the referee to put the ball into the scrum must be discontinued, as it was contrary to the laws of the game. The Otago Union wrote asking the Nev; Zealand Union to send a cablegram to the English Union requesting a dispensation to allow the referee to put the ball in the scrum. Southland advised that at the direction of the New Zealand Union it would discontinue the practice, but pointed out that the experiment had resulted in a decided improvement to the game. They asked the New Zealand Union to endeavour to secure a special dispensation for the referee to put the ball in the scrum. South Canterbury advised that it would discontinue the practice, but also stated that the experiment had produced an improvement.
