MEETINGS TO COME. May 11—Otaki Maori. May 11 —Ashburton. May 11, 13 —Poverty Bay. May 16, 18 —South Canterbury. May 17, 18— Manawatu. May 18, 20—Waikato. A Denial: There' is no truth in the announcement that an offer of 4000 guineas had been made and refused for Yogi. Sleeveless: Sleeveless just failed to see the distance out in the Hawera Handicap, and should be, improved,by the race. Working Well:Royal Money is reported to be showing good form in his work on the Invercargill tracks, and his next appearance will probably be at Wingatui next month. Favourites Fail: The Southland Racing Club's meeting did not prove , a joy to investors, as only one favourite got home during the day. Not Ready: Dark Flight recently knocked his head oh the door of his box and had to be given an easy time for a week. He is not considered ready to run seven furlongs, and will not be paid up for at Ashburton. Debarred: Robalink, an acceptor foi’ the Myross Handicap at Invercargill, was debarred from starting x owing to an irregularity in connection with his training. Record Equalled: Spear Gold’s Australian and New Zealand record of 53sec for four furlongs and a-half, established in August, 1937, was equalled at the Newcastle meeting on April 23 by Ender ' by, a two-year-old colt by Salamagnndi (now in Southland) from Alicia. ,

Brilliant Fencing: Clarion Call was backed for the Egmont Steeplechase as if the race was all over and the “good thing’’ came off, as the top weight led from start to finish, winning by 10 lengths after giving a brilliant display of fencing. Lady Stella was in second berth all the way. She kept within a couple of lengths of the top weight for the first two miles, but whenever she made a forward move Clarion Call had no difficulty in drawing away again. / Successful Mares:

In the Otago and Southland districts this season mares have experienced a very successful season. In addition to Sparkle arid Thermidor, who head the list of winning horses foi’ the first nine months, Mona’s Song, Cherokee, Pink Robe, Peony Rose, Sovereign Lady, Blissful Lady, Sailing Lady, Alma, Boaform, Pink Dress, Gold Flight, Amelita, Doria, Sea Lady, Pink Bond, Nightwings, Kilrobe and Ortyx have been good winners. Good Record:

Ahinga, winner of the principal sprint handicap at Hawera is a six-year-old gelding by Spear Vance from Wee Rose, and a member of T. R. George’s big team. He has done a lot of racing this season, having started 20 times for five wins, a second, a third, and has been placed fourth in four races. He has now won four times out of his last six starts, and returned his backers on Thursday surprisingly good dividends on both machines.

Guste’s Record: Guste won his fourth race in six starts over country when he beat the others pointlessly in the Ritchie Memorial Steeplechase at Invercargill. He took charge with five furlongs to go, and at. the home turn put a break of 10 lengths on Poniard and Gay Boa, with Trisox, who had been prominent early, beaten off. Guste came on to win very easily. His jumping right through was of an excellent standard, and he had too much pace on the flat for the others.

Southland Jockeys: There has been an interesting struggle among the Otago and Southland jockeys for top place during the first nine months of the present season and three apprentices: L. J. Clutterbuck (15 wins and a dead-heat), W. F. Ellis (15), and L. W. Hare (14 wins and a dead-heat) — head the list. J. W. Jennings (14), P. Spratt (10 wins and two dead-heats), G. Barclay (10), J. L. Strathern (9 wins and two dead-heats), R. J. Mackie (9 wins and one dead-heat) are next. . POVERTY BAY RACES. FIELDS FOR SATURDAY. GISBORNE, May 6. Trotting

MEETINGS TO COMB May 9, 11—Forbury Park. May 11 —Waikato. May 18,. 20 —Nelson. May 25, 29 —Auckland. May 25 —Canterbury Park. June 3—Ashburton. Well Bred: ~~ A well-bred sort is the three-year-old filly Helen Scott, a daughter of.U. Scott and Lady Chenault. Jesse Owens: In his last five starts Jesse Owens has been first four times and second once. His ridiculously easy win at Oamaru on Saturday suggests still better things very soon.

Speedy: Gold Bank displayed a good deal of pace in taking charge of the field in the Enfield Handicap at Oamaru, and showing the way to the home turn. She, however, failed to carry on, and finished third. Not Right:

Aidershot, whose form at the Easter meeting at Addington showed him to be a good stayer, was poorly supported in the President’s Handicap at Oamaru. His running was in accord with the amount of money invested on him. Good Performance:

Warfield- was beaten in the Advance Handicap at Oamaru, but the brother to Marsceres gave an indication of his worth by stepping 3.19 2-5 to finish second from 60 behind in a big field. From a front mark in a suitable class the Kerrytown pacei’ looks a certainty. Unreliable: Manian let his backers down in the opening race at- Oamaru, but in a tighter class later in the day the locally-trained trotter gave an improved display and won by half a length from the Otago Central gelding Traveltone. Manian, who is a halfbrother to Swift Guy, will win a lot of races when he becomes reliable in his gait.

Close Finish: For a race run in mud, the Otatara Trot at Invercargill was a wonderful race, about, seven horses finishing in a bunch. Summerwealth, Erin’s Country, Crown Peak, Night Nurse and Overproof were in front going along the back, and half way round the top Crown Peak, • Erin’s Country, Night Nurse and Summerwealth were nearly in line well clear of the others. Night Nurse struggled home a length in front of Crown Peak, with Erin’s Country, Summerwealth and two or three more all in a heap. Erin’s Country did some galloping in the straight, and a protest was lodged against him, and third place was awarded to Summerwealth. For Grass Tracks:

Dusky Sound is a fine pacer and ran a splendid race for a mile and a-half at Oamaru. A long sustained run of more than a mile on the outside of the field found him out long before the final stages were reached, and under the conditions it would have taken the best horse New Zealand has known to have won from 72 yards behind. The winner could have improved upon the 4.23 4-5 he registered and Dusky Sound would’ need to have broken track records to have won. His running at Addington has been disappointing and apparently he is at home only on a grass track. FORBURY RE-HANDICAPS. DUNEDIN, May 6. The following penalties have been declared for the first day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting:— Bayfield Handicap—Danzie Guy, penaly 36 yards, now 36. Domain Handicap—Mahoe, penalty 48 yards, now on 48. Ritchie Memorial Handicap— Peter Smith, penalty 12 yards, now on 24. Renown Handicap—Mendel, penalty 24 yards, now on 24. Flying Handicap—Jesse Owens, penalty 12 yards, now on 24.
