TRANSPORT LICENSING

AUTHORITY’S VISIT Several matters affecting transport on the West Coast were discussed with the interested parties at Greymouth last evening apfi this l morning by Mr. T. H. Langford-, No. 3 Transport- Licensing Authority. Last evening Mr. Langford l met irepresentatives of the Farmers’ Union (Mr. J. Mulcare), Grey County Council (Cr. J. W. Hannan), Blackball Women’s Institute (Mrs. Masion), Blackball Miners’ Uniojn (Mr. R. Clarke)', Ngahere Women’s* Institute (Mrs. Mulcare), Messrs. McKay (Superintendent N.Z. Railways Road Services), G. 11. McLean (District Traffic Manager), G. D. Smart (Stationmaster at Greymouth), H. C. Langford (Railway. Business Agent) and Taylor (Road Services Manager, Hokitika). The question of the time-tables of the road and rail services in the Grey Valley was discussed and the problem of the employment of the* youth of Blackball in Greyn’outh, which is impossible under the present conditions. The outcome of the discussion was that negotiations are to take place between the Railways Department and the road services which, it is hoped by the Authority, -will result in a better service, and also that the necessary availability for the population in that area will be provided.

This morning the Authority discussed with the State Miners’ Union representatives (Messrs G. English and J. Guy), the Engine-drivers’ Union (Mr. J. Unwin) and Wylde and* Son (Runanga operators) the problem of the conveyance of miners to the new Strongman mine at the Nine Mile and the developments likely to occur there. The'Railways Department, the Transport Department and the Millets’ Uniion are to refer the matter to the Government and in this case; also, it is hoped that the outcome' will be satisfactory to the miners and all concerned.

The Authority also met representatives of the* various carrying companies who are concerned over the increased costs of (operation, particularly in relation to timber haulage. The matter is to be given further consideration by the Authority and also referred to the* Price Investigation Tribunal for its consideration.

Several other matters, of a private nature, wore also discussed by the Authority.
