A young married couplei made their appearance in the Magistrate’s' Court at. Palmerston North, last week, to answer charges of making false declarations to the registrar of marriages. The accused were Albert Lawrence Coley, labourer, aged 25, and Eileen Joyce Coley, aged 20. The evidence disclosed that when they were married at Shannon by the registrar the accused gave assurances that the girl was 21 years old, in spite of the fact that Coley had been told by the girl’s parents 'that she was 19 on her previous birthday. A birth certificate produced showed that she was born on March 24, 1920. The girl’s parents told the Court that they had not been Notified of the wedding until after (lie ceremony. They had only seen Coley once before. That was when he had asked their consent to keep company with their daughter, but they told him to wait awhile, as she was too young. Both accused pleaded' guilty and were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. In the meantime they have been allowed bail.
