NELSON EDUCATION BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The chairman of the Nelson Education Board (Hon. W. H. Mclntyre) was instructed at the monthly meeting to accompany the Hon. P. C. Webb as a deputation to the Minister for Education (Mr Fraser) asking for authority to call, tenders for the construction of a new school at the south end of Westport. The chairman was instructed to consult the Public Works Department on the delay in starting ground improvement work at Sergeants Hill. The secretary (Mr H. J. Thornton) reported that tenders for the erection of a new school at Black’s Point were considered much too high by the Education Department, and it was decided to call fresh tenders. Tenders are also being called for the disposal of the old primary school building at Black’s Point.
The Department advised the appointment of Mr C. A. Cumming as senior inspector in the Nelson Board’s area.
The Department wrote suggesting that flags be flown at schools during 1940 on certain historical dates. The proposal was approved. The board decided to hold the biennial meeting of householders for school committee elections on April 22.
Application is being made to the Education Department for a grant for converting the disused school building at Granity into a manual training centre.
The following teaching appointments were made: —Sole teacher, Nuggetty Creek, 56 applicants, George Pilling (Heriot); sole teacher, Shenandoah, 50 applicants, Robert Nimmo; assistant master, Westport, four applicants, Clarence Boys (Masterton West). ’ .
