PRISON FOR THEFT.

For the. theft of £1 during the absence, of a: man .with, whom he shared a nut, Frederick William Huggins, 19, labourer, and a soldier in. the s.er.vice. of the Defence Department, was sentenced by the Magistrate (Mr. Stout) to 14 .days’ hard labour.

The deputation was headed by the-pfesident-of- the -Associated- Chambers, Mr. W. 9. -MacGibbonj-of.Christchurch.
The subjects'discussed included defence, the moheary'-system and l the Reserve Bank, the cost ;of public works; ■ measures for'; securing '"The maximum. primary-pr oduction, a modification of the import licensing system, hospital rates in relation to the social security scheme, and the transTasman air service. •- .
Mr. Nash indicated the Government’s policy on certain of these matters, and undertook that others would be Considered.
Building' by-laws.

B'uifi' musMbe-prepared by a registered' architect or engineer. In Christchurch the figure was £4OOO or more, but in Auckland it was £2OOO of~more. In some boroughs the figures were lower, particularly in Newmarket, where the' by-law applied to buildings of £BOO or more. , ; ..j..- ;
, The council discussed, the question of the admission of aliens to membership of the institute. It- was that the council should not-consider the applications of aliens/until such time ■as they had been granted. naturalisation as British subjects and passed the- necessary 'examinations.
