PRESS CENSORSHIP
MR HORE-BELISHA’S ARTICLE.
[By CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]
LONDON, February 19
Two members of the House of Commons, Lieut.-Commander R. T. Fletcher (Labour) and Mr G. Mander (Liberal) are raising in Parliament the question of the censoring of an article in the “News of the World” by Mi’ Hore-Belisha on Sunday. At two points, where the writer was appealing for immediate and substantial armed support for Finland, there were, insertions in a bracket, viz., “Here twenty-four lines are omitted,” and “Here twenty lines are omitted.” This is the first time that an English newspaper has indicated the censor’s deletions. Lieut.-Commander Fletcher says: “The question at issue is whether the article was censored because it contained facts, valuable to the enemy, or facts contrary to the policy of the Government. If Mr Hore-Belisha was censored because his views are inconvenient, we are confronted w ith the first principles of totalitarianism.
