EARL HAIG’S SECRETS

20-YEAR-OLD BAN ENDED. LONDON, January 6. ' The 20-year-oM ban placed on the publication of Earl Plaig’s war diaries, which have been locked in a. steel cabinet at the British Museum, ended this week. But it has not yet been decided whether the public shall be allowed to read them. They consist of 32 volumes, containing 800,000 words. The fieldmarshal made his notes every night and they were sent in a special bag to Lady Haig, who typed them. Lieut-General Sir Bertie Drew Fisher, one of the Haig trustees, said this week: “We have never discussed what, should happen to the diaries when the 20-year limit was up. I shall see Major-General de Pree, the other trustee, within a day or two and we shall then decide what to do. “A codicil to the will allowed the trustees to use their discretion about publication. In 1934 we permitted Mr Duff Cooper to see the diaries when he was writing the earl’s biography. He used only part of the material. There is much that has never been published."
