WESTLAND TRAMPING CLUB

LAKE KANIERI ACTIVITY

HOKITIKA, February 12.

On* Sunday a busy day was spent by ten members of the Westland Branch of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, at Lake Kanieri where they were conveyed by private cars. The purpose of the visit was to clear the entrance to the Mt. Tuhua track and erect appropriate sign-posts. Two sign-boards were supplied by the Lake Kanieri Scenic Board and were erected, one at the road side and the other at the point where tha path enters the bush. An hour or so was spent in the morning in cutting a new line of track near the road at Hans Bay, the old entrance to the Mt. Tuhua track having fallen into disrepair. After enjoying tea, the party split up and five men went to the summit (3608 ft. while the remainder cleared the trail of fallen logs and undergrowths as far as the Big Slip. Rata, which was still blooming, though late in the season, made vivid splashes of colour on the hillside and the climbers were entertained by many native birds. One of the members of the first party added to the interest of the climb by taking readings on an aneroid. Unfortunately, fog obscured the view from the summit and misty rain marred the return journey. | However, by taking advantage of the labours of their comrades, the climbers were able to make a rapid descent.
