ACCUSED REMANDED. ■ ■" - •——-i , ■ ■■ The two accused, Desmond Greapey, 19' miner, of Greymduth, and Cohn Smith, 27, miner, of Greymouth, arrested in connection with the burglary at Hokitika, on February 2, when a safe, with its contents, was removed from the premises of Quinn’s Motors Ltd., appeared before Mr. G. G. Chisholm, S.M.,'in the Magistrate’s Court, Greymouth to-day. They were remanded to appear at Greymoutb, on Mom day, February 19. / ' - Accused were jointly charged that on February 2, 1940, at Hokitika, they did break and enter the counting house' of Quinn’s Motors, Ltd., and did steal therein one safe. £3B in money, two cheques, keys, a welding torch and a quantity of stockinette, of a total value of £75 10/-,/the property of Quiriri’s Motors,'Ltd. Smith was further charged that on February 4, at Terernakau, he did steal a bicycle, valued at £s', the property of Alexander Robert McConnon. Mr. C. R. McGinley represented Greaney, and Mr. W. Douglas Taylor appeared for. Smith. Detective-Sergeant H. E. Knight, wlib prosecuted;'asked for a remand until Monday, February 19, as he was not ready to proceed with the charges, and might possibly not be ready next week. I-te asked that accused be remanded in custody. Mr. McGinley offered no objection to a remand, but asked that bail be renewed in the case of Greaney. Mr. Taylor also asked for hail fpr Smith. Detective-Sergeant Knight opposed bail, and said he feared that if both accused were released' they would not report, or.'put in an appearance. ’Whpr, Greaney’s release on bail was previously granted, Smith, though arrested, was’ not in Greymouth. If bail was to be Allowed, he asked that it be made substantial, and that accused be ordered to report at 7.30 p.m., daily to the police. To the Magistrate, Detectiye-Sef-gearit Knight said that Greaney Was a Greymou(h resident, and that Smith had been employed at a coal mine fpr two years, working with Greaney, ana had stayed at a Grey mouth boardinghoiise. Accused were remanded until February 19. Bail of £lOO each, in their own recognisances, anil two sureties of £l5O each, wa,s allowed.
