It is officially reported that the condition of the Governor-General of Canada (Lord Tweedsmuir) has slightly improved, but is still critical. ■ He has undergone a second emergency operation at the Royal Victorian Hospital, Montreal, where -he was taken by special train after the first emergency operation. RELAPSE ANNOUNCED. (Recd. February 12, 10.30 a.m.J LONDON, February 10. According to an Ottawa message, this morning’s bulletin from the Montreal Neurological Institute, states that Lord Tweedsmuir suffered a relapse. The statement caused grave anxiety throughout Canada, and prayers for His Excellency’s recovery are being said in the churches of all denominations throughout the Dominion. A conference of five specialists decided on an immediate blood transfusion and a third operation. The donor is believed to be his son, Alastair. LATER. Lord Tweedsmuir died at 7.13 p.m. at the Montreal Neurological Institute, where he suffered a relapse in the forenoon, resulting in a third operation lasting four hours, preceding and following which he was given blood transfusions, the physicians believing he withstood the operation well. He is the first King’s representative in Canada to die in office, since the Confederation. Lord Tweedsmuir was better known as John Buchan, the popular author. He was born in 1875. He was educated at Glasgow and Oxford, and won various honours. He served in various administrative official capacities, and was elected to the Commons for Scottish Universities in 1927. He received a peerage on being appointed Govr.General of Canada. His term of that office was soon to expire, and he had declined an extension.
