NEW ZEALAND STATISTICS. [FEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Decembei- 9. There were more than 18,000 more motor-vehicles licensed in New Zealand at the end of last September than was the case at the same date in 1938. Figures published in the Abstract of Statistics also show that there are nearly twice as many licensed! vehicles in the North Island as there arc in the South.
In the North Island at the end of the third quarter, there were 189,887 licensed vehicles, and in the South Island 95,699, a total for the Dominion of 285,586. The total for 1938 was 267,107. Of the various types of vehicles, the increase from 193 S to 1939 is most marked in the case of cars, where it is 18,479.
Following are present totals of the various types of vehicles:—Cars, 203,543; light trucks, 24,852; heavy trucks, 20,311; passenger trucks, 1613: omnibuses. 680: taxis. 1591; rental cars 503: private hire cars. 190; service cars, 596; trailers, 6509: dealers’ cars. 1808: local authority road vehicles. 4690; Government vehicles, 3823: motor-cycles, 14,747 (decrease of 1856); dealers’ motor-cycles, 130. Statistics for motor-vehicle accidents from the beginning of April to the end of October, which resulted in death or injuries, show that there were 2426 accidents in that period. 2156 being collisions and 270 non-collisions. Results of the accidents were: —Minor injuries 1876 persons, serious injuries 1249. fatal injuries 137, total 3262.
