RAIN SPOILS TRIALS Two trial matches set down to be played at the Recreation Ground yesterday, were abandoned after_ lunch on account of heavy rain. PROBABLES The Possibles-Probables match opened on the No. 1 wicket, which was slightly-soft. A strong northerly wind assisted the bowlers. Possibles won the toss and fielded. Probables, however, made a mediocre showing against good bowling and fairly sound fielding. D. Dewar 21 was the only batsman to impress, and he played a solid innings. Scott and Denia were particularly impressive with their bowling. Both kept an admirable length, and bowled with life. Denia in addition to his four wickets, collected two slip catches. Marist scored 36 (Cunningham 11, Earlow five for 13, Knapp- five 15) and 37 (Boswell 22, M. Marshall six for 12, Lee one for none, Knapp one of 15). Old Boys A. scored 126 (M. L. Marshall 30, Vaughan IS, Dewar 18, Knapp 16, Tindale 14, Herridge two for 17, Cunningham four for 32, Somerville two for 41, Curnow one for 29). SCHOOL DEFEAT UNITED Technical School defeated United seniors at Cobden on Saturday by 58 runs on the first innings. United batted first and scored 60 (Rapley 23, Westwood not out 13, Lindsay four for 27, Knight two for 11, McLeod one for five, R. Parry two for two). School hit up 118 (G. Henderson 42, R. Parry 42, Horne three for 12, Scott three for 13, Joseph two for six, Westwood one for 22). After Saturday’s grade cricket played in good weather, Carisbrook A and University lead in the Dunedin championship with 16 points, Carisbrook B and Grange have 14, Old Boys 12. Kaikorai 10, Dunedin 8, and Albion 6. The leaders played an exciting drawn match on Saturday. Carisbrook A scored 268 (Caradus 78. Begg five for 92). anu when the last over started University’s total was 267 for nine wickets. The additional runs for a win were not scored, and Carisbrook could not capture the final wicket, so that the result left the two teams bracketed at the top of the list. Toomey scored SO and Baker 44 in University's 267 for nine wickets, 'and Moloney took four for 71. There was a close finish also in the Old BoysAlbion match, which Old Boys won by six runs on the first innings. Albion scored 259 and Old Boys 265 (Leader 60, Mills 58, Silver five for 118). Grange 212 (Chei tieburgh 45, Robertson seven for 71) beat Dunedin 129 and 99 for one wicket (Robertson 57 not out) on the first innings.
