SANDERS CUP
TRIALS AT LYTTELTON [PER PKESB ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Nov .19. Ariki, with George Brasell in charge, won the first two trial races at Lyttelton over the week-end for the selection of a boat and crew to defend the Sanders Cup for Canterbury. Ariki has established a substantial lead on points from the other five competitors. The trials this year are of unusual interest, because of the entry»of a boat from Akaroa and one from the Estuary,'and also because of the introduction of the points system. Total points scored so far are: —Ariki 126, Elfin 46, Prize 46, Kokahi 8, Manihi 8, Ponga 6. The first race yesterday started at 2.45 ‘p.m. in a light north-easterly with moderate sea. The course was a windward and leeward one, from a buoy off the Gladstone Pier, around a buoy off Officers Point, then round the pile at the pile light, three times round. The start was on the wind, the boats getting away fairly evenly. The wind began to drop for the second half of the race and the boats became more strung out. There was little change of position,* with the exception that Ponga overhauled Kokako. The finish was; Ariki (G. Brasell) (4.35.8 p.m.) 63 pts. Elfin (W. Tissiman) (4.37.55 p.m.), 31pts. Prize (W. Webb) (4.42.0 p.m.), 15 points. Manihi (K. Hendry) (4.45.35 p.m.) 7 points. Ponga (D. Beaumont) (4.46.55 p.m.), 3 points. Kokako (R. Sutton) (4.47.10 p.m.) 1 point. The second race was held this afternoon. The race was started in a light south-west wind, which later backed to easterly. Ariki had an easy win. The order at the finish was: Ariki (63 points) 1. Prize (31 points) 2. Elfin (15 points) 3. Kokako (7 points) 4; Ponga (3 points) 5. Manihi (1 point) 6. The first race for Idle Along class boats, to select a representative for Lyttelton to complete in the Dominion championships, was held at Lyttelton this afternoon and attracted 12 entries. By contrast with the Sanders Cup trial race, this race was most interesting. It was keenly contested. The start was at 3 p.m. and the finish was: Kismet (F. Mackay) (4.20.46 p.m.) 1; Elite (J. J. Osborne) (4.20.52) 2; Turi (N. Stringer) (4.21.21) 3. WELLINGTON TRIALS
WELLINGTON, November 19. Kitty, sailed by J. C. Bolland which won all five trials held to select the Wellington representative for the Sanders Cup contest, will be recommended by the sailing committee of the Wellington ,Provincial Yacht and MotorBoat Association as the Wellington entrant. In the Idle Along trials Riptide, sailed by E. Beck, gained three firsts, a second and a third, and will be recommended as the Wellington representative in the New Zealand Idle Along championships. The trials were finished during the week-end, when a further three races for each class were held. Points gained by each competitor were: Sanders Cup —Kitty 40, Tassie 32, Floclaire 30, Anival 24, Louie 17, Vanguard 15, Aurora 6, Jannet 2. Idle Along—Riptide 62, Tornado 48, Valhalla 45, Vampire 40, Elaine 38, Cavalier 37, Manon 32, Electra 29, Damfino 28, Unique 27, Viking 21, Idle Along 15, Pegaway 3. The crews of both Kitty and Riptide should put up excellent performances in the Dominion contests, as each is very experienced. Bolland came to the fore in Sanders Cup racing when he competed in the Wellington trials in Lauchlan’s Jewel in 1937. Though not sailing a very good boat, he gained some placings. Last year he skippered Kitty in the trials and again sailed very well. At one stage of the trials it looked as though he would be the Wellington representative. Bolland’s forward hand, R. D. Morrison, sailed with Nigel Blair in Kitty in 1937 when Wellington won the cup in Dunedin. F. Karlen,’ mainsheet
hand, has had experience at a number of Sanders Cup contests. The remaining members of the crew are C. S. Morrison and B. Jukes.
Beck has been prominent in Idle Along racing since he won the Wellington championship in 1934. He has been extremely unlucky, as several times when he has been in, the winning position in an important contest his gear had broken in spite of the careful attention it receives. His brother, D. Beck, mainsheet hand, has sailed with him for a number of years. R. Gray, forward hand, has been a member of the crew for several seasons. SECOND AUCKLAND TRIAL AUCKLAND, Nov. 19. The second Sanders Cup trial, held yesterday under favourable conditions, was won by Marjorie by 11 seconds from Aileen. Caress, which won the first trial, retired after fouling Marjorie early in the race. PROTEST AT DUNEDIN DUNEDIN, November 19. The third Sanders Cup trial race was resailed to-day, the time limit having expired before the boats completed the course on Saturday afternoon. Vai, Lynnette, and Evelyn were the first three boats to finish, but owing to a mix-up on the Castle beacon, Evelyn has lodged a protest against the other two boats.
