TODAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME.

November 3, 4—Whangarei. November 4 —Napier Park. November 4—Stratford. November 4,6, 8, 11—Canterbury. November 11 —Napier Park. November 11, 13 —Avondale. November 18 —Levin. November 18 —Southland. November 18, 20 —Waikato. November 25, 27 —Auckland. November 25 —Otaki Maori. Passaform: Passaform started favourite 1 for the Buchanan Memorial Handicap, but did not race up to expectations. The Motukarara track does not suit every horse, and he- may be one of them. Gilltown: The Moonee Valley Cup winner, Gilltown, is a five-year-old gelding by Excitement from Chorus, by Magpie — Pearl Necklace, by Tressady—Waianui, by Cooltrim. From Randwick: The three-year-old Beau Pere filly Zest, has joined H. Dulieu’s team at New Plymouth. Zest was previously trained at Randwick by J. T.'Jamieson. Phaleron Bay Colt: Horomea, dam of Mittie and Lady Tinkle, has a colt foal by Phaleron Bay, and will be mated this season with Defoe, sire of Lady Tinkle. Areas: The Hawke’s Bay-trained Areas, who is highly regarded, is stated to be an unlikely starter in the Spring Plate on Saturday. He will probably have his first race at Riccarton on Monday Too Short: According to a Melbourne report on Catalogue’s, showing over 9J furlongs in the W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on Saturday, the distance was not long enough for him. This is the horse who has won the last three Winter Cups, one mile! Auctor: Auctor, ridden by W. Connor, wen the Apprentices’ Handicap last year, at Riccarton, and will again be a candidate on Saturday next. On Satur- > day, A. Anderson will have the mount. Dorado: The Grandcourt-D’Oro gelding, Dorado will be ridden by R. J. Mackie in the hurdle event at Riccarton on Saturday. Dorado has won twice over the battens this season. He is a half-brother to Moorland, who won races on the West Coast some years ago. Respective Weights: When Jewish Lad won the Otaio Hurdles at Washdyke, he was weighted at 221 b above Full Back. In the Spring Hurdles at Riccarton the difference is only 31b. At Washdyke, Jewish Lad was 171 b above Fundy Bay (who lost his rider); at Riccarton the margin is reduced to 31b. If by any chance either beat Jewish Lad, the victory might be expensive.

Jockeys for Whangarei: Riding engagements announced for the Whangarei Racing Club’s Spring meeting are as follow: C. G. Goulsbro, Tip Toes, Philcourt, Dauber, Lady Fox; R. E. Horne, Solitary, Maxam, Saccone, High Crown, Miss Valerie; RHatwell, Romani, Penzance; J. Forsyth, Hunter’s Rose; F. Cleaver. Bachelor King (hurdles), Gay Movie, Gamos; G. Smith, First Gold Money; F. Beguely/ Milanion; T. Williams, Land Girl; D. Craddock, Imperator; G. Cameron. Odtaa.

Lowenberg: Of the Gup candidates defeated at Wellington, Lowenberg comes into the picture. He was one of the last out of the straight in the Wellington Han-, dicap in which he finally finished close up with Yours Truly, whom he has to meet at Riccarton on 81b worse terms. Still, under the circumstances, Lowenberg did well to finish near the placed lot. When Centrepoise won at Wanganui he was very favourably handicapped. He won by less than a length from Lowenberg, who now comes in on 18ilb better terms, and hence cannot be ignored, despite his bad run at Trentham.

Promising: . Sir Crusoe’s second in the Trial Plate at Trentham, and win at Bulls on Saturday, stamped him as 1 a. youngster of considerable promise. A halfbrother to that good handicap horse Meamea, Sir Crusoe is by the Huriy. On horse Defoe, and he is bred from Hine Wehi,. who was by the Sunstar horse Arausio from Te Aupaki, dam of that great miler Toxeuma and Huiarau, the dam of Werohia, Captain Furst and Geira. This family, which traces back to the Theorem mare Woodstock, has produced a New Zealand Cup winner in Wolverine, and Sir Crusoe should run out ten furlongs before very long.

Favoured: . The combination of Royal Chief and Beaulivre for the Cup and the Stewards’ Handicap has been in keen demand during the last week, while Arctjc King and Globe Trotter and Yours Truly and Sleeveless have also engaged attention. Rakahanga is also bejug warmly fancied. The last-named is a brilliant filly, and last January at Trentham she won the Telegraph Handicap by four lengths in 1.103, time which is seldom beaten on the track. Among the unplaced lot were Smoke Screen, Oratory, Paper Slipper, Black Thread, and Mittie. Rakahanga actually meets Paper Slipper lib. better as a result of their form in the intervening 12 months. She was a winner over six furlongs on the third dqy of the Cup meeting last. November.

N.Z. Cup Trial: Although not impressive as a New Zealand Cup trial, there was a good deal of merit in the performance of Hunting Cat in the Waverley Cup (says a Taranaki writer). He made all the pace over the last six furlongs, and the time, 2.8 4-5, has only been bettered on two occasions, by Oratress in 1919 and Mendip m 1929, both of whom carried less weight. Hunting Cat. appears to have taken a new lease of life, having won three out of his last four races. It is interesting to note the number of Waverley Cup winners who have scored in big two-mile races since the war. Included in the list are Oratress, Depredation Muraahi, The Banker and Fersen Star Rose was second in the Waverlev Cup just prior to going south to score his sensational victory in the New Zealand Cup in 190 G. Promising Maidens: Among the maidens raced at Bulls

’on Saturday last, nothing created a better impression than the three-year-old Tuatara, who was having his first race. Tuatara was about eighth most of the way and finished fairly well for sixth, close up to the placed horses. It looked as if the race would improve him a lot. Tuatara, for whom Mr. W. McA. Duncan paid 200 guineas at the 1938 sales, is by the Lemberg horse Lord Quex, and he is bred from a Tuata —Reclaim mare, who is the dam of that former smart sprinter Lavina, who won sixteen races. Tuata was a half-brother by Athentic to the Auckland Cup winner Mahutonga. Another likely sort seen in this event was Segra, who was having his first race since the Marton Spring meeting twelve months ago. He finished strongly into fifth place. Segra, who is now trained at Marton by F. McHugh, is a four-year-old entire by Siegfried from Polly Peachum, who' was a half-sister to My Own and Runnymede. He can be marked down for an early win.

Breeding of Yours Truly: That a horse is stoutly bred does not invariably mean that he will stay, but the lines of all distance race winners show that breeding has a domim ■ating influence on stamina. In the New Zealand Cup field, as far as breeding is concerned, Yours Truly is the aristocrat. He is a four-year-old entire by Siegfried (sire of Wotan) from My Own by Lord Quex (Lemberg—Lady Quex) from Tressida, by Tressady (Persimmon —Simplify) from Princess Melton, by Duke Melton from Chand Bee Bee, by Royal Hampton. Yours Truly is bred on the same Siegfried —Lord Quex mare cross as Lady Furst, but on the maternal side conies from a .vastly stouter winning strain. My Own won the Great Northern Oaks and C.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap, and Tressida, a Great Northern Oaks winner herself, left Runnymede, Raasay, Simba and Happy Landing in addition to My Own. Imported Chand Bee Bee founded a great line in Australia, which among others includes Amounis, Furious, Eurythmic, Piastre and Raw Bee.

Royal Chief: Royal Chief last season started seven times, and won twice and ran second on two occasions. He made a* poor show in the Dunedin Cup, but was then too loaded in condition to see out a mile and a half under 9.8. He won the James Hazlett Gold Cup, but was all out against moderate opposition. Royal Chief was unplaced in the Thompson Handicap, and followed up .with a second with 9.7 to. Peerless over 11 furlongs in the Autumn Handicap. On that form, if a genuine stayer, Royal Chief on 71b better terms should beat Peerless at Riccarton. In the Awapuni Gold Cup, Beaupartir 8.4 beat Royal Chief 9.0 by a length, and Peerless 8.1 was over that margin away in 2.5 2-5. Royal Chief 9.9 won the Sockburn Handicap in the good time of 1.59 3-5, but failed in the Great Autumn under what might be termed the impossible load of 10 stone. In that race Arctic King 8.11 was beaten by half a length by Siegmund 8.2, in 2.32, with Dictate 7.7 a head away third. There does not seem any great reason to enthuse about Royal Chief’s chance in the Cup under 9.6, if they make him carry his weight. Still, he represents class, and his form towards the end of his recent Australian trip wns good.

N.Z. Bred New Zealand bred pacers now racing in Perth and entered for the in-

ter-Doniinion championships are Blondie, Rollo, Sunny Morn, Kay Francis, Supertax, Tempest, and Cloudy Range.

Special Edition: Special Edition’s easy win against a good field of improvers at Oamaru on Labour Day indicated that this young pacer is again back to his best and likely to win in better company at an early date. His form last season indicated that he is likely to prove a good stake-winner over all distances.

Amiss: Blaydon failed to keep his engagement in the Redcastle Handicap at Oamaru, and it is reported that this promising horse has gone amiss. He has always been regarded as a pacer with a future, but his career has been interrupted on more than one occasion through soreness and it is now understood that he will be off the scene for some time. Southern Chief:

The brilliant performances registered by Southern Chief during the last few months have led many keen followers of trotting to regard him as unbeatable in any race for which he is qualified, but it should be remembered that his form in races at Addington has not been impressive. His private work there, was in the championship class, but he apparently had ideas' of his own on race days.

Expensive: Although Nelson Eddy has been rather an expensive horse to follow this season, he ■ has been highly attractive in defeat on more than one occasion, and it should not be long before his admirers are put on better terms. There are few pacers with a greater turn of speed, and racing should prove to his advantage.

Aldershot Sold: The Wrack —Trix Pointer four-year old Aidershot recently changed hands, and he now races in the interests or Messrs Scott and’ McFarlane the owners of Mackscot. Early last season he displayed fine form to be the best of the early juveniles, but his subsequent displays saw him fall from favour. However, he recently returned from a fairly lengthy spell, and his appearance suggested that he is greatly improved’ by his holiday, having built up well and taken on a more solid appearance.

Lucky Jack: Lucky Jack is now one of the favourites for the New Zealand Cup, a race he won in 1937 and finished second in last year. In the last race ioi the cup in an unwieldy lield Lucky Jack, driven by D. C. Watts, received 12 yards from Lawn Derby, started off the same mark as Parisienne and conceded starts up to 48 yards to all others in the race. He was beaten a length and a. half by Morello and registered 4.16 1-5. Since then his form has not been outstanding, but in finishing second to his stable-mate Parisienne in the Metropolitan Handicap at Forbury Park he recorded' 4.15 1-5 for two miles. He and Parisienne started off the same mark, but Lucky Jack, who this time will be driven by his trainer, will receive 12 yards start. Lucky Jack on his day is a pacer entitled to be ranked with the best the Dominion has known.
