According to a London cablegram, the Bishop of Wellington is returning to New Zealand, fully restored in health. He states that the war has j frustrated the raising of funds in Britain for the Wellington Cathedral, but : the necessarj r organisation, has been > t created.

Miss Sheila Murphy, whose marriage to Mr. P. Sweetman will take place shortly, was entertained by the management and staff of Truman’js Ltd., at Harker’s, last evening. On behalf of the staff, Mr. K. McLauchlan presented the guest with an electric iron and an electric toaster. Mr. G. M. Truman, ou behalf of the management, made a presentation of a travelling rug.

Mr. A. D. Park, managing director of the State Advances Corporation, has returned to Wellington from Sydney, where he has been on business in connection with the Corporation. Other arrivals are Sir Norman Nock (Lord Mayor of Sydney), who is accompanied by Mr. G. K. Bain, general manager of the Australian Guarantee Corporation. Mr. R. Roche, who has been on the ground staff of the West Coast United Aero Club, at Greymouth, left -last evening, for Taieri aerodrome, Dunedin, to take up a position as Aircraftsman (second class) in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Mr. N. Farmer, ground engineer for the Club, has also left for Dunedin, having been accepted for the Air Force, with the rank of Corporal.

. Inspector J. Powell, of New Plymouth, after 36 years’ service in the New Zealand Police Force, will retire at the end of next month. Mr. Powell joined the Royal Irish Constabulary almost 41 years ago and, after his training period, was posted to the constabulary reserve, a force held in readiness to deal with rioting in any part of Ireland. He joined in Dublin and was in the force for five years when he left for New Zealand. He had not been in the Dominion long when he joined the New Zealand Police Force, and he served at Invercargill, Wanganui, and Napier, where he was promoted to the rank of senior-ser-geant. From Napier, Mr. Powell went to Auckland and later to Whangarei, and from there was transferred to Christchurch. On his promotion to the rank of inspector he was transferred to the charge of the New Plymouth district, where he has ‘been for the past five years.
