REEFTON NOTES
[our own correspondent.] REEFTON, October 20. The monthly meeting of the Reefton branch of the Red Cross Society was held on Wednesday, Mrs. W. J. Humphries presiding. A circular was received from Wellington, pointing out the services the Societies can render as follows: Train personnel in first aid, home nursing, hygiene and sanitation, and air-raid precautions; form voluntary aid detachments and register all willing to serve in their various categories; coopt members of kindred organisations, such as women’s division of the Farmers’ Union, Women’s Institutes, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts; register halls and other buildings suitable for auxiliary hospitals; compile a roster of people willing to billet refugees, should occasion arise; organise helpers into sewing bees and for knitting etc.; promote socials and entertainments to raise funds for Red Cross purposes. A letter was received from Mr. G. Poulter, Maruia, stating that the proceeds of a social held on October 14 had been donated to the Inangahua district Red Cross funds. Mr. E. Baird, secretary, Inangahua Silver Band, enclosed proceeds, £4/16/8, from a dance organised by the band. It was reported that the various coal owners of the district were donating three tons of coal each. The gift of a pram quilt was received from Mrs. G. Wells, senr. It was decided to ask all schools in the Inangahua district to assist in a copper trail in aid of the' Society’s funds. It was stated that gifts of socks, balaclavas, pyjamas or men’s flannels would be welcome.
