October 23 —Poverty Bay Hunt. October 23 —Waverley. October 23—North Canterbury. October 23—Waikato Hunt. October 28 —Banks Peninsula. October 28 —Rangitikei. Good Start: Absolve, winner of the first race >at Masterton yesterday, is the first of the progeny of the Blandford horse, Soli-citor-General to race. He is a big colt from Sweet Charity, dam also of The Surgeon, and Knightlike. Islay Dowhs: x ■ Islay Downs, who won the maiden event at Dunedin on Saturday last is a three-year-old colt by Gustavo from the New Zealand Oaks winner Pink Terrace (Tractor —All Pink), hence he is a half-brother to Half Note and the jumper Tomcat. Janefield: Janefield, who finished second to Islay Downs at Dunedin on Saturday last, is another offspring of the Solferino horse Gustavo, whose stock are beginning to show promise. Janefield, a three-year-old filly, is well bred maternally, too, as her dam is the Stihny' Lake —Droski mare Bonnie Lake, the dam of Mobile. Related to Catalogue: Kudina, who was narrowly beaten in the Juvenile Handicap on Saturday last at Hastings, is by Croupier from Calorina, who was a half-sister to Catalogue, Hunting Cat and Paleta, being by the Soult horse Elysian from Catalini, by Catmint from the imported Symington mare Symbolism. Defaulter’s Trouble: 1 According to trainer F. A. Roberts, Defaulter’s trouble is not serious. The affected part will be blistered, and though Roberts is convinced that he could have ,the champion ready to race in a few months, he will probably not 1 race again until he returns to Randwick for the Autumn racing.

Consistent Hack:

One of the most consistent hacks seen out this Spring is Noble Fox, the three-year-old son of Foxbridge and Lady Lu. In the last five weeks he has recorded two firsts and a similar number of second placings and that form will ensure Noble Fox getting plenty of support in the second division of the Gordon Handicap at Ellerslie to-morrow.

On the Improve: Tupeotu, winner of the Greenmount Steeples at the Pakuranga meeting in August, has gone on the right way since that fixture and is an improved \ horse. Last week Tupeotu gave a first rate display of jumping over a round of the steeplechase fences at headquarters, and his prospects in the Hunters’ Steeplechase to-morrow cannot be overlooked. Riders for Washdyke:

Some riding engagements made for to-morrow’s programme at Washdyke are: C. Wilson: Dictate, Haughty Winner, Scold, Midguard. C. Fox; Rabble, Improvement. C. Stokes: Lady Don, Lady Leigh, Balmenter, Don’t Forget. H. Hibberd: Thermidor, 'My Abbey, Jewish Lad. M. Caddy: Density, Rebel Lad, Dranoel, Queen Beth, Elmarch. R. Caddy: Merry March, Nolana. M. Billington: Lord Midas, Sir Gladsome. A Stokes: Dinah Dhu, St. Cloud.

Bred to Stay: Lady Furst is bred to see out a distance as she is by Siegfried (Son-in-Law-Firemist, by Sunstar) and is bred from Vigilance, who was quite a useful mare in her day. Vigilance was by the Lemberg horse Lord Quex and she was bred from Watchful (dam of the Wellesley Stakes winner Watch Officer), by the Clanranald horse Signalman from Parasite, by Pounanu or Mousquetaire from Kie Kie, by Lord of the Isles from Toi (G.N. Derby), by Diomedes from Toi Toi (dam of Kakapo, New Zealand Cup, and Hornby, New Zealand Derby), by St. Aubyn from Waimea (dam of Manuka, Puriri, Papapa, Ramarama and Wainui). Waimea was a daughter of the famous Flora Mclvor.

Mungatoon and Ripley: Mungatoon, who was taken to Sydney as a travelling companion for Defaulter, but was not able to race owing to an injury-, was left at Randwick -n charge of M. Polson. F. A. Roberts brought back with him the four-year-old gelding, Ripley, by Bonnemont or Rivoli from Lero, by Cyklon from Lesbos, by The Welkin. Ripley figured as a winner on two occasions last season, and was once second and once third in nine starts. His first: success was in a division of a maiden event at Warwick Farm in January last, worth £ll5 to the winner, and at Randwick later in that month he won the Novice Handicap, worth £3lO to the winner, both races being run over a mile. Ripley was secured on lease by Roberts,- and will race in his colour* Roberts also brought back with him an apprentice, S. Green, who weighs about five stone. *

Flying Spy, winner of the Juvenile Handicap at Hastings on Saturday las does not come from a numbered ••milv but the line is nevertheless Successful one, and this latest meml of the family to race looks as if X Will l» tban ' ,9ef “ l - SI “ 18

carrying a lot of superfluous condition at present, and racing will do her good. Flying Spy is by Hunting Song and is bred from that useful mare Lady Spy, who showed a lot of pace in her races on the flat a few years back and was later successful as a hurdler. Lady Spy is a daughter of Lord Quex and she is bred from Ruse, who was by the Soult horse King Soult from Ruse de Guerre, by the Nordenfeldt horse Stepniak from Crecy, by Hotchkiss from Crescent, who traces back to the imported Moth. This family produced some great stayers, some of the best known being Ladybird, Odd Trick, Pungawherewhere, Vogengang, Crackshot, St. James, Tranter, Telford, Krupp, and Brigadier. In more recent years there have been quite a few good winners including Pink Terrace (Oaks), Pink Note (Dunedin Cup) and Aeolus.

TIMARU RACES. PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW. fSPECIAL TO “STAR.”! CHRISTCHURCH, October 13. The Spring fixture of the South Canterbury Jockey Club will be held on the Washdyke racecourse to-morrow. The fields are all well-filled, the only exception being the hurdle race, but in this there is material to provide a close contest. The principal event, the Teschemaker Handicap, has drawn, an exceptionally strong representation of middle distance talent, which includes several New Zealand Clip candidates. Thermidor ran a lair race only at Wingatui last week, but will be improved by it. Dictate has been working very well, and is expected to win a race at Trentham. He has been trying for a long time t, Succeed in an important event, and his turn must come soon. He will be ridden to-morrow by C. Wilson, who will have the mount on him at Trentham, and there will not be any penalty for Trentham should he win at Washdyke. Rabble is short of racing, while Monipere has done a lot of schooling lately, and in addition to being quietened down, he is stated to be well advanced. Queen Dorothy, one of the blinker brigade, will have Ito improve on Wingatui form to have a chance, and the same • applies 1 to Swordstick, who needs more racing. Wardress is likely to be well supported. She is a natural stayer, and although this will be the biggest undertaking she has tackled, she is capable of mastering it. Balmenter has been “knocking” in several races lately, but just misses being a sound proposition. Rebel Lad is not ready, but Gay Rebel is a lightweight possibility. Spartan is certain to be pacemaker for a good way, but the journey may again find him out. The Wrecker has been- disappointing both in his races and in track essays.

The Flying Handicap field is bordering on the best class, and with sprinters of the known ability of Silver Streak, Toro Koura, Lady Leigh, Density, Flagman and Phenomenal engaged, a fast run six furlongs should be recorded. This race will be followed with interest owing to. the presence of many Stewards’ Handicap candidates.

The track is likely to provide excellent going without being at all hard, and the win and place system will be again in use. The following horses are likely to be well supported: Otaio Hurdles: • Fundy Bay, King I cel, Bad News. Spring Stakes: Lord Midas, Hearth, Airline. Washdyke Trot: Wainoni Jack, Club King, Star Ace. FINAL GALLOPS. AUCKLAND, October 12. The best trials at Ellerslie this morning, the final gallops of horses engaged at the Auckland Spring meeting took place, were those of Silver Quex and Silver Stick over five furlongs. Francis Drake over four, and Royal Appellant over seven. The course proper, on which the poles were 5 feet out, provided good going, and the weather, with the exception of a shower in the breakfast interval, was fine. After running her first, two furlongs in l-ssec, Silver Quex finished several lengths ahead of Aero King over five furlongs in 1.4 15. This equalled the best time of the morning over the distance. Valspear was running on at the conclusion of half a mile in 52sec, and British Talent had a bit in reserve while running the same distance in 52 15sec. Another fine effort over the five furlongs was that of Silver Stick, who also registered' 1-4 1-5, after taking 13 l-ssec for the first furlong. Blonde Princess finished clear of Trevace over a similar distance in 1.4 3-5. She ran the last half-mile in 51 3-ssec, and was doing her work attractively at the finish. Pern impressed more than Miss Appellant while traversing a mile in 1.48 2-5, the first half in 52 3-ssec. Beeswing worked evenly over five furlongs, which took 1.6, the last four in 52 35sec.

IMPRESSIVE WORK. The Mitchelson Cup candidates, Sly Fox and Tidewaiter, were companions over a mile. Tidewaiter got a couple of lengths the better of the start, but Sly Fox was with him at the end of the first furlong and then drew out a couple of lengths, which he maintained' to the finish. They ran the first half-mile in 52 l-ssec, and the full distance in 1.47 1-5. it was a useful trial. . Francis Drake ran half a mile in 51sec, the best of the morning, over the distance. Valmint impressed more than Trilliarch throughout six furlongs in 1.22 4-5, the last three in 41 4-ssec. The' two-year-olds Phaleron; Harmony, and Taane Pango worked attractively over half a mile, the firstnamed finishing in front after completing the distance in 51 2-ssec. The The first furlong took 12 l-ssec, and Phaleron, on the outside, was going away at the end. Royal Appellant was too good for Ivy Willonyx and Fidelis at the conclusion of seven furlongs in 1.33 2-5. They ran the first three in 39sec, and Royal Appellant was doing his work well at the finish. Right Royal and Royal Huntress completed six furlongs in 1.21 L 5. Valerian joined them at the half-mile post and finished full of running to beat them home by a couple of lengths. The final half-mile toow 53 3-ssec. Farland, who went away slowly from the seven furlongs post, came home in 1.37 4-5. He ran his last five in 1.6 4-5, and was accompanied over the last half-mile by Gadger, the final three furlongs taking 40 3-ssec. Farland has a lot in re serve.

GREY JOCKEY CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual meeting of the Greymouth Jockey Club was held yesterday afternoon, Mr. T. E. Coates (President) presiding over an attendance of the following members: A. Behan, C. L. Kettle, AV. H. Parfitt, A. M. Carroll, 11. Moore, AV. Gieseking, D. James. J. J. Anisy, A. J. Wilson, G. R. Harker and M. J. Fogarty (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs G. Blair, Allan Smith and G. G. M. Mitchell.

The report, as already published in the “Star” and the balance sheet showing a loss of £l2/5/4 on the .year’s working, were adopted. Reviewing the balance sheet, the President said that the Club was not in a bad position compared with many other clubs, as £l5OO would clear their financial liabilities. It was sad that the Government had now taken away the rebate, which would lessen the Greymouth Club’s income by about £5OO. The new committee would have to find out where that £5OO in rebate was to be made up. There were a lot of expenses in the financial statement that would not be recurring, but the Committee would find that there was always something cropping up to eat into the finances. The bridge leading on to the course had been in a precarious position, but was now quite safe, and the cost was about the same as the cost of the seats in the balance sheet, so that though the cost of seats did not recur, it cost the Club a similar amount for repairs to the bridge. He was satisfied that the Club could not be run on less than £6OO a year, and with another £5OO in loss of rebate to make up. the committee would be faced with an annual expense of about £l,lOO. The Committee had been criticised at limes for persevering witli livestock on the racecourse, but even though about one-twelfth of the caretaker’s time was taken up with the stock, | from 1933 to 1937, there had been a i profit of over £l,OOO on the stock. In , 1938, there was a loss of £35, but a I profit of £lll was shown last year. Track fees were only £ll last year,

indicating that all the local owners had disappeared. Some had sent, their horses away to the centres. It was felt that if a light boy were obtained to do riding work, there would be more horses trained locally. A few years ago about 25 horses were trained at Omoto, and now there were only about four. If there were some 25 to 30 horses trained at Omoto, as he felt these would be if a light boy was available, it would be a great help to the Chib. The new Committee should consider the question of obtaining a light boy. The President also referred to the assistance given by the Railways Department, the Public Works Engineer, and the County Engineer. Mr. Kettle said he thought, the Club was in a better position than the chairman had indicated. They owed about £1,600, but that they had buildings insured for £B,OOO, the position was quite good. The rebate, which wbuld be lost in future, amounted to £367 last year. Meetings held in other parts of the country in the past few weeks had been successful, and he felt that the club could look forward confidently to the success of the Christmas .meetings. He agreed that something should be done to encourage local owners, and he felt that if a boy were available, more local owners would come in, and horses trained in other centres for Greymouth owners would be trained at Omoto. The provision of proper-ac-commodation for cars was a necessary item. Present accommodation was not satisfactory, and the Club had to give consideration to country people, on whom they depended a great deal. As Treasurer, he was quite satisfied with the Club’s position.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS Mr. T. E. Coates was the only nominee for the position of president, and he was declared elected. With the addition of Mr. A. M. Carroll, the retiring committee, comprising Messrs Alan Smith, W. H. Gieseking, W. H. Parfitt, H. D. James, G. R. Harker, C. L. Kettle, A. Beban, H. Moore, W Greenhill, J. W. Hannan, and G. Blair was re-elected. Mr. C. H. Rose was re-elected auditor.

Discussing stakes, the President said that the stakes offered by the Club had gone up £642 since 1932. The figures up to 1939 were: 1932, £3,061; 1933, £2,825; 1934, £2,835; 1935, £2,439; 1936 £2,510; 1.937, £3,148; 1938, £3,619; 1939, £3,709. In 1935' and 1936 there was no June meeting, which accounted for the drop in stake money in those years. Votes of thanks were also' passed to the Engineer, Public Works Department, Mr. R; T. Smith, the County Engineer, Mr. J. Higgins, the Railways Department, and Stationmaster, and the Press, in appreciation of services during the past year. Mr. Kettle said he did not think that the Club should reduce its stakes for the next meeting.' Some clubs were reducing, but the Greymouth Jockey Club had not made the increases that some clubs had.
