TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping meetingsTto come September 9—Wanganui. September 9 —Greymouth. September 16—Foxton. September 16—Ashburton. September 16, 18—Avondale. September 21, 23—Geraldine. September 23 —Marton. September 30—Otaki-Maorl. September 30 —Kurow. September 30, October 2 —Ohinemuri Omoto Trained: Malvasia, trained by C. J. Walsh, at Omoto, has been nominated for hurdle events at the Geraldine meeting to be held at Orari this month. I Recommissioned: Rebel Lad has been put into work again by D. Cotton and the Robespierre gelding looks in sound and robust condition to undergo another preparation. Cotton is also now training the four-year-old gelding Pink Lad, by Pink Coat from Carette, dam of Locksley.

Dunedin Jockey Club: At a meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s committee yesterday it was decided to hold a one-day Spring meeting on October 7, instead of a two-day meeting on October 5 and 7. The McLean Stakes and Dunedin Guineas will be included in the programme. Change of Stable:

Jewish Lad and Screamer are now in J. McLean’s stable at Riccarton, and both have been nominated for the Ashburton meeting. McLean’s other pait, Paper Note and Palo Alto, will also be racing at Ashburton. Palo Alto is a three-year-old gelding by Lord Quex from Rapallo, by Grandcourt from Parley, by All Black from Pourparler, a sister to Bobrikoff.

Has the Ability: Vai Lu did not have the best of luck in his bace at the Pakuranga meeting, ''and h© is likely to be seen to better advantage before the season is much older. There is no doubt concerning Vai Lu’s galloping ability, and as he can act in any sort of going he will have plenty of opportunities to extend his record from now on. Always in Front:

All the way wins were the order of the day, at Wanganui yesterday, such being recorded by Harina, Dorado, Hagen, Lucullus Lad, and Ecstatic. The Bigot, who finished third to Lucullus Lad, ran in blinkers, and it proved a satisfactory deterrent to his habit of' running about. Gayest Son ran a fair race also, but hardly good enough to give him a chance of winning the Guineas.

Freshened Up: When Royal Dance registered three firsts and one, second placing in his first four races as a hurdler a bright future was predicted for the chestnut gelding. However, he failed to retain his form and was soundly beaten in his four subsequent starts. Since he last appeared in public, at the Wellington meeting in July, Royal Dance has had ample time to freshen up, and he may make amends before the season is much further advanced.

Will Get Support: Hunto, the three-year-old colt hy Hunting Song, in A. Winder’s stable at Te Rapa, has not raced since the Pakuranga meeting. However, he went well enough at that fixture to warrant his future being regarded favourably. Hunto is entered for a couple of maiden events at the Avondale meeting, and if started solid support is likely to be accorded him. He has also been paid up for in the Avondale Guineas.

Submission’s Failure: A notable feature of the racing of the'first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting was the failure of the three-year-old filly Submission in the Flying Handicap. Submission has been responsible for a lot of outstanding track wori, and she was backed down to < a short price, but after having every chance in behind the pacemaker and eventual winner, Ecstatic, she failed to come on in the straight. Submission looked as if the race would improve her, but her effort would not give her much chance of beating Beaulivre in the Guineas. The best race behind Ecstatic came from Florence Mills, who, like the winner, was having her first race since Easter. Florence Mills drifted from a handy position on the turn, but came on again at the finish and only just failed.

Their First Appearance: There were only two horses in the field for the Maiden Race at Wanganui yesterday, who were not previously raced. They were Glen Donal and Landcry. Glen Donal is a four-year-old black gelding by Colossus from the Gasbag—Formoltov mare Glendalla, who never raced. When sold by his breeder, Mr J. Mulvaney, to Mr W. J. Crawford, of Palmerston North, his name was changed to Parthenon, but on being resold to Mrs J. Mulvaney, of Feilding, his name was changed back to Glen Donal. Landcry is the name that has been selected for the gelding who appeared in the entry list as an Acre gelding. He is a bay three-year-old ou? of the Complex-Calceo-laria mare Cryptomeria, a descendant of the Princess taproot, and he has been secured from his breeder, Mr R. Hicks, by Mr W. B. Connors, of Wangaehti.

N.Z’ers AT RANDWICK SYDNEY, September 7. 1 In training at Randwick, Defaulter and Beau Vite, who are in the Chelmsford Stakes, shone to-day. Ridden by A. E. Ellis, Defaulter ran a strong seven furlongs on the course proper in 1.301. His first three were covered in 38sec. Beau Vite, ridden by Lappin, was too good for Pearl of Asia over five furlongs on the track in 1.3, and must be conceded a great chance in the stakes. Royal Chief, accompanied by Moorsotis, was responsible for a dazzling seven furlongs on the tan in 1.27. He will make his second attempt to win the Chelmsford .Stakes. High Caste worked freely over a mile in 1.48. Malagigi did an impressive workout over seven furlongs in 1.32. Paddy ’ the Rip ran six furlongs creditably in 1.19. Te Hero was withdrawn from Saturday’s meeting. Local horses working attractively are Cooranga, Reading, and Buzalong.
