THEFT OF £3631
INSURANCE AGENT CHARGED. [l-Ell FRESH ASHOCTATJON.] AUCKLAND, September 7. Arrested, on warrant, on a Motueka fruit farm, oii Sunday, August 20, Eric Stanley Watts, 37, insurance agent, was charged, on remand, in the Police Court, that, between June, 1938, and February, 1939, he stole sums of money amounting to £2,722 belonging to Thomas Arthur Taylor, also, on nine other charges, that he stole from other persons sums ranging from £25 to £312. The total amount which accused was charged' with stealing was £3,631. Several witnesses gave evidence, and some, cross-examined by Mr L. K. Munro, who appeared for Watts, said that they did not see any of the insurance policies on which they advanced money. Other witnesses said that they expected a profit of 12J per cent, on the money handed to Watts. Detective-Sergeant Walsh, in reply to Munro, said that Watts had been very frank and had given all possible help to the police. Watts, who pleaded guilty to all charges, was committed by Mr McKean, S.M., to the Supreme Court, for sentence.
