BULLER GORGE FATALITY

MAN KILLED Al’ SAWMILL

WESTPORT, .July IS

One man was killed and another injured at the Buller Gorg'e sawmill near Whiteclil’fs to-day. when a truck load of timber they were pushing slipped back on to them. The victims were James (“Scottie”) Duncan, 45, believed to have no relatives in New Zealand, whose neck was- fractured when he fell on the tramway, and Cyril Kerr, 23, married, of Inangahua Junction, who suffered from mindr injuries and was admitted to the Inangahua Hospital.

The accident occurred when a steel rope allached to (lie truck was caught on the drum of a steam winch, causing the truck to surge backwards and knock both men down. Duncan fell between the rails and the sleepers, and the, low axle of the truck pushed back his head, breaking the neck.

Duncan had only started work at the mill on Monday, and had been previously engaged on Public Works Department, jobs. His body was taken to Reeftou, where an inquest will be held.
