BLACKSMITH INJURED WHANGAREI, July 19. While dressing a drill in a blacksmith’s shop at the Public Works Department quarry at Tauraroa, this morning, Gavin Cotter, single, 35, residing with his mother, was shockingly injured when an explosion occurred, lie is not expected to live. SERIOUS CHARGE. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 18. Charged with the unlawful use ol an instrument, a resident' of New Ply* mouth was arrested this .afternoon, and -was brought before' Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M. He was remanded in custody_ till Friday, by which time, it was considered, the condition of the woman concerned would be known to the police. Suppression of the name was ordered. YACHT STILL MISSING WELLINGTON, July 19 The Chathams Islands radio reported at 9.41 a.m. that the captain of the trawler South Sea found no sign of the missing yacht Faith, with a crew of three, during a zigzag search with five launches 14 miles eastwards. The search has now been abandoned. The wind has changed to east-sqjuth-east, whiclif should provide a favourable wind for the yacht’s return, either to New Zealand or Chathams. The Faith is well provided with foodstuffs and sail. MOTORIST SENTENCED. NELSON, July 19.
John Leonard Hall, a young man. who was found guilty of negligent, driving and causing the death of a cyclist, was sentenced to two nionths’ imprisonment, and disqualified from driving for five years. Mr Justice Nortlicroft said there was nothing vicious in the case, but, like a great many motorists, principally young, but also many older ones, accused had driven irresponsibly, without due regard to the rights of others.
WOMAN’S MONEY STOLEN. WELLINGTON, July. 19
Sentence of six months’ imprisonment with hard, labour was imposed by Mn Stout, S.M., on John Rueben Samuel' Shepherd, hotel porter, for theft at Auckland' on June* 17, of £l2, the property of Kathleen Kamo. Accused became acquainted: with a man who was keeping company’ with complainant, and was told by him that she had £l4 concealed in a drawer of a sewing machine in her room at the hotel. Accused took £l2 cf it, sharing it with the other man, who had since been dealt with, at Auckland.
PIG-HUNTER’S FATE. GISBORNE, July 19
A fortnight’s unremitting search on the slopes of Hikuarangi Mountain for the missing Maori pig-hunter, Dave Campbell, ended yesterday, when the search parties disbanded. Campbell is believed to have died from injuries or eposure, on the fogbound l heights, where he separated’ from his two companions while hunting on June 30. The missing man was an> experienced! ibushman, but those who took part in the search declare that experience would be practically valueless in the conditions prevailing then. Campbell was 22 years of age, and was single.

BDRGLARY AT HASTINGS. HASTINGS, July 1!)
By bursting open the door of the building, intruders stole 13 gallons o'' petrol from the Omahu Shingle Comjjany premises' in Omahu Road, some time last night. Everything was secure when the premises were left lasi evening, but wheir the employees returnd this morning, they found the door open, and signs of a jemmy having been used.
There are grounds for believing that the “break” has some connection
with the disappearance of a car from Market Place, some time l between 7.50 and 1 S o’clock last- night. The car, was left standing near the Masonic Lodge for about. 10 minutes, with the doors unlocked, and the ignitioi! key in the cur. When the vehicle was recovered in Nt'.lscn Street, shortly before midday, evidence was found of something' heavy having been, placed l in the rear portion. Slight damage was done to the dashboard, and the glass' was missing from the speedometer d’ail. :
