The Windbag colt Pageant scored bis most, important win to date in the Australian Cup at Flemington to-day. lie was a long way back early; but superior stamina, combined with his light weight (7.8), proved a big factor. The win enabled the bookmakers to escape heavy liabilities over the double with El Golea.

Dark David surprised by his good race for second. Ho battled gamely, as did Ortelle’s Star. Bourbon was a long way out of his ground early, but finished well, suggesting his Sydney Cup chance. Spear Chief weakened. Grecian Princess was the disappointment of the race. The top-weight Manolive led early by 10 lengths from Young Crusader, who was 15 lengths ahead of Dolphin. Then came Dignitary, Spear Chief, Mac o Roni, Grecian Princess, Red Sails, and Pageant. Pageant improved his position commencing the last mile, where the leaders began to tire. Several horses had good chances at the straight entrance. Pageant finished strongly to win by three-quarters of a length. After Ortclle’s Star came Bourbon, Kingdom, and Spear Chief, with Grecian Princess last. Manolive broke down. A sensation occurred at the start of the C. M. Lloyd Stakes, when Ajax’s opponents lost considerable ground. The champion merrily cantered over the course to record his eighteenth successive win. His record now reads: 25 wins and three seconds in 29 starts tor £28,875 in stakes. Ajax is now in thirteenth place among the great stake winners. The New Zealand-bred Amiable was always prominent to defeat the consistent Tetreen in the Leonard Stakes. Red Morn, on the outside rail, ran a good third. Wilson, also New Zealand bred, put up an exceptional effort in the Carmichael Stakes to win after being last at. the home turn. Wilson, who is a stablemate of Ajax, has now three wins in his last four starts. Hiawatha ran a game race, as did Lord Walla.

Another New Zealand-bred winner in Crojick figured in an exciting finish in the Farewell Handicap. Crojick showed a return to his best form, and in a strong finish beat Baryta. The Trump finished last and National knocked up. A protest was dismissed.

Deckard, after being always prominent, won the Autumn Steeplechase, showing improvement on last week’s form. Gaskill and Royal Fire ran good races. The winner was ridden by the former New Zealander, A. Driscoll. 'The weather was warm and there was a good attendance. Results: — Leonard Stakes. Six furlongs—Amiable (N.Z.) (R. Although the day was dull, the Tiniaru Trotting Club enjoyed fine weather for its meeting to-day, and the track was in excellent order alter the recent rain. With a total oi £17,644. the betting showed an increase of £1197/10/- over last year’s figures, when £16,446 was handled. 'Highland Scott, a fine type of stand-ard-bred two-year-old, gave further proof of his outstanding speed by winning the Timaru Nursery Slakes easily, but there was little credit, attached to Invigorator’s success in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes, this field being one of the weakest ever paraded. The Timaru Club has made a. good’ attempt to bring juvenile trotters into favour; but. the poorness of lliis classic will probably cause the deletion of the Trotting Stakes from the programme. The club has enjoyed no success whatever with this race, and there is no indication of any improvement being made in the future. JIOSTILE DEMONSTRATION. There was a demonstration against the judge’s placings in the Wai-iti Handicap at Timaru on Saturday. From every angle it appeared' as if Gay Lady, the favourite, had got up to gain a decisive victory; but. the judge placed Evora. Loyal Avis and Gay Lady in that order. A prolonged hostile ' demonstration followed. The crowds lined the fences, jeering and counting the judge out, and lor a while it appeared as if they would invade the birdcage. The demonstration had reached an ugly stage when the judge altered his placings. Under the rules of trotting he is allowed live minutes in which to do this, and although he may have exceeded his time slightly, there is not the slightest doubt, that had the original placings been allowed to stand the supporters of the favourte would have suffered an injustice. The prompt, action of the stipendiary steward (Mr J. S. Shaw) in getting the officials together before the demonstration had really begun assisted in no mean measure in the incident closing satisfactorily. THAMES TROTS. PARAURI WINS CUP. THAMES, March IL. The Thames Trotting Club hold its summer meeting to-day in fine weather. There was a large attendance and the track was fast.
