AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS WELLINGTON AVINS SHIELD [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, March 12. In light, rain the New Zealand amateur athletic championships concluded at McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday. The track was heavy and times in most events were not fast. Hie highlight of the meeting was the performance of I'. F. Sharpley (Hawkes Lay), who won the 100 yards sprint, 120 yards hurdles, and 220 yards hurdles? In the 120 yards hurdles Sharpley equalled his own New Zealand record of 15sec., and in the 220 yards hurdles he broke the New Zealand record of 25 2-sscc., returning 25 l-ssec. An innovation was a Marathon race. 'l’he winner was C. Gibbons (Otago), who covered Lhe distance oi 26 miles 385 yards in 2hr 4-lmiii. 58 1-5 sec. The interpret incial shield was won by the Wellington Centre, with 35 points. Other centres were placed as follows: Canterbury 33, Otago 28, Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay 25, Most Coast (North Island) 15, Auckland 11. The Speight. Cup for the march past was won by Wellington. There was a crowd estimated at 7500. Detailed results were: — 880 Yards—V. P. Boot (Canterbury) 1; T. D. Blewett (Canterbury) 2; L. Hannan (West Coast, North Island) 3. Time: linin 54sec. Longley (Hawke’s Bay) took the lead, with Boot close behind. Longley led at the bell, when Boot came through with Hannan and Blewett close behind. Boot opened out in the back straight and went on Io win effortlessly.

At. the end ol the first mile Johnston was in the lead, followed closely by Pullar, Mackay, Dare, and Mclntyre. Pullar and Johnston drew away from the field at one and a-half miles. The leaders were alternately taking the lead with two miles covered. With three laps Lo go the contest settled down to a duel between the two leaders. Johnston led Pullar by a yard at the bell, but in the back straight Pullar assumed the lead, and with a sudden sprint finished strongly to win by 10 yards.

Francis ( Auckland) 3. Time: Zhr 41min 58 1-5 sec. Won by 360 yards. A field of nine went out at a steady pace, and at the four-mile mark Gibbons, Lord, Austin, and McGregor dropped back. With half the distance completed Gibbons assumed the lead, closely followed by Lord and Austin. In the next eight miles Austin again assumed the lead, in the final stages Gibbons increased bis pace and went on to finish in good style.

WORLD RECORD EQUALLED MISS NORMAN DEFEATED AUCKLAND, March 12. A performance equalling the world's record for a woman athlete over 100 yards was registered by Miss Doreen Lumley on Saturday afternoon, when tlie Auckland provincial junior and

Miss Decima Norman, by nine inches. Miss Norman had the advantage in the early stages, but over the last io yards Miss Lumley managed to gain a lead tiller an epic struggle. There was uo wind at the time of the event, and it is considered there is no doubt the performance of Miss Lumley will be recognised. Running with a short stride and noticeably forward body lean, Miss Norman won the 220 yards championship in good time for (he (rack ol 20 2-5 ; ec. There was little between the pair over the first 100 yards, Imi niter that Miss Norman held an advantage which Miss Lumley was un able to challenge, and crossed second two feet away. Many good performances were seen at. the Otago junior and women’s athletic championships at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon. After two days’ rain the tracks were heavy and not conducive to good times. Nevertheless good times were recorded in many of the junior events. The outstanding runner in this section was C. McGregor, Otago senior 100 yards title-holder, who won the 100 yards in 10 l-ssec.. the 220 yards in 22 4-5 see., and the quarter-mile in 52 -J-sscc. Miss B. Forbes improved upon her best performance for a New Zealander in the women’s high jump by dealing sft Oilin into a slight breeze. Another outstanding woman athlete was Miss D. Adams, who won the 80 metres hurdles in faultless style and recorded 12 4-ssec. in her heat. A comparatively low standard prevailed in the women’s track events.
