CLOAK FOR CRIME

DOOR-TO-DOOR SALESMEN Twin brothers who were stated to have used the means of an honest livelihood as a cloak for their crime, were each sentenced to 12 months imprisonment at Greenock Sheriff Court. Scotland, when they pleaded guilty to nine charges of housebreaking in various parts of Renfrewshire. Accused were Joseph McDowall and George McDowall, aged 22. The fiscal, Mr. W. G. Young, said that the offences were committed in residential areas in Clarkston, Netherlee, Crossmyloof, Giffnock. Newton Meajrns, and Bearsden. Accused had gone round the districts ostensibly selling coal briquettes. When they called at a house and found it unoccupied they broke into it. A policeman became suspicious of their actions and apprehended Joseph. George McDowall escaped and was arrested later. Property valued at not less than £6OO, a,nd which included a considerable amount of jewellery, was stated to have been stolen. An agent said that, the brothers were unemployed, and the offences were the result, of their inability to use their leisure in the proper way.
