Bracket and Scratching: Brackets lor the first day at lientham include: Ruapehu Handicap Sigurd and'Dissipation. , Catalogue was scratched lor an gagenients at. 9.30 a.in. yesterday.
Trentliani Riders: Additional riding engagements toi Trentham are: —P. Burgess: Lone Raider, te Hero, Argentic. Amigo L. Dulieu: Gladium. C. P- Shield: Patches. J. Mclnally, Yours 'Truly. J • Forsyth: Loyal Queen. P. Atkins: The Bigot, Silver Stick, Saki. Kathbel ~ Lady Montana. B. H. Morris: Gay Son,’ Oratory, Laughing Lass, Indian Sun. R. Marsh: Caution.
Aranui: .. . Aranui, one of the two-year-olds in the Wellington Stakes, has raced only once in New Zealand, running unplaced at the recent Dunedin meeting. He did all his previous racing in Australia, where he had one success, winning the maiden two-year-old race, first division, over five furlongs, at Caulfield on November 19. He carried 7.10, and won by a length in LOL It was in moderate class. He is a chestnut colt by Colossus— Cupid’s Mark.
Dynasty: One of Mr G. IVf. Curries team to compete at the Wellington meeting will be the two-year-old Dynasty, by Posterity from Drawl, by Limond from Drax, by Spearmint frpm Suncroft, by Sunstar. Dynasty is a first foal and made an encouraging showing in Ins first and only start at Woodville last month. On the score of breeding he has much to recommend him. and it is expected that he will develop useful form at least.
Black Thread: From a weight-carrying and time point of view, Black Thread put up a good, performance when he won at Manawatu with 8.10 in 1.13, and gave a narrow beating to Counterblast. The time put up reads fast, as 113 has very seldom been broken on the course. * Cimabue, 9.10, won the Manawatu Stakes in 1.12 2-5, and Autopay, 9.1, put up 1-12 1-5 m the Palmerston North Stakes, and these furnish the only occasions of a winner breaking 1.13. L.' . ’— training at trentiiam. FINAL GALLOPS.
A Cup gallop that created interest at Trentham yesterday was that in which Galteemore, The Bigot, Peerless, and Argentic ran a mile. I hey kept in fairly close order throughout, and finished as named. Galteemore, who had a pull in the weights was 'always going well in front, and finished on. The time was 1.43, the final half-mile taking 51sec. The Bigot Mas ridden by P. Atkins, who will be on him in the Cup. He had the outside running, and his effort was satisfactory. Peerless ran better Lian she usually does in track trials. She was ridden by W. Doyle, who has the mount in the Cup. Siegmund and Queen of Song took 1.43& over the same distance. The last half took 51Jsec. Siegmund is looking well. His probable rider in the Cup is H. J. Callahan. The only other Cup candidates on the scene —Arctic King. Hunting Cat, and Lickem—were not asked to gallop fast. Lickem worked on the plough with his Cup rider, F. Cleaver, up.
The Sprint ers: Among the leading sprinters, le Hero again showed brilliance by running half a mile in 48sec. He hung badly round the turn, but for which he would have improved on the time. This is an indication of his class. Laughing Lass and Oratory ran six furlongs in 1.17 J, the last half-mile in 51sec. Oratory had a pull in the weights, and also had the outside tunning. but they finished together, both going well. Farland revealed pace by running away from Top Row at the end of about five and a-half fprlongs. El he time over the last half was aOsec, and they ran the five in 1.4. Top Row, no doubt, was not knocked about; but the gallop showed' Farland to be a distinct possibility in the Telegraph Handicap.
Alunga did his best work for some time in running a half in 49sec. Ecstatic ran a smart half-mile in 50sec, with Wiggins up. Aranui and Raroa ran the half-mile from the mile to the four in 50£sec. Aranui, who was a winner at Caulfield in November, is a typical Colossus colt. Gold Salute and Astaire ran a smart half-mile in 49Asec., the former finishing half a length to the good. Astaire looks a. likely sort of a. hack. Rabble, Dungarvan, and Haughty Winner were again associated' in a workout, covering seven furlongs in 1.31, the last half-mile in 50 2-5 see. Rabble, with a light-weight up, was in front at the end. The Tvro-Yeai’-Olds:
Among the two-year-olds. Konneta provided a feature when she ran right away from Lady Drake and Bronzeshar down Hie straight half-mile. There is no doubt, about Konneta s brilliance.
Indian Sun had Rakahaniga. as a mate in a sprint down the straight. Indian Sun is a big. long-striding gelding, greatly resembling his halfbrother, Solarium, but. is still green. Lord Midas and Serenata also ran down the straight. Silver Stick and Lutanist were given easy tasks. They are the only horses that F. Davis has at the meeting. Lutanist is an unlikely starter in the Wellington Stakes owing to the difficulty of getting a. suitable rider at 6.12.
The Auckland visitor. Vitement, who is considered to show considerable promise, finished in front of Drachma and Floral Robe at the end of six furlongs, run in 1.18 3-5.
Lustra! and Hinerawe ran an interesting mile together. They ran the first; half in 49sec, ana then took 55sec to come home, running the full distance in 1.44. They finished together. Red Cat. was one of those who worked on the plough, and she was lookingwell. Prime Quality was given easy work
He will probably be ridden by R. V\ Savage.
TRENTHAM RACES
PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW
[SPECIAL TO “STAR,”]
CHRISTCHURCH, January IS. The Summer meeting of the Wellington Racing Club will be. opened at Trentham to-morrow, when the usual strong fields, representative of all racing centres in New Zealand, will be paraded. The track is expected to be good, but not as hard as in many previous years, ami the win and place system will again be in use. Main interest will he centred in the contest for the Wellington Cup. Since the weights appeared, the champion three-year-old Defaulter has been a. staunch favourite with pre-race enthusiasts. and he promises to go out one of the shortest, priced candidates in the historv of the event. Defaulter no doubt lightened up a lot on his Auckland trip, and it might bo that he. will not. be at his best, to carry 8.11. over a. mile and a-half. Still it. is only a good three-year-old’s weight, and Defaulter should not have a very difhcu t task. Whether such a hard ordeal will Iravo any effect on later activities will have to be awaited. Riccarton stables are once again strongly represented throughout the programme, and as the majority of the candidates have had plenty of racing of late, a good share ct’ the prize money should come south. The following horses 'are likely to be well supported: — Trentham Highweight: Sir Nigel, Lone Raider, Pladie. Wellington Stakes: Konetta, Beaulivre, Te Hero. THAMES SURVEY
HOT BOX SELECTED
[SPECIAL TO “STAB.”]
AUCKLAND. January 18
Although Hot Box hits a good weight for a ihree-year-old in the Goldfields Cup. the chief event a.t the Thames meeting next Saturday, he ■will probably he favourite on the day. His pilot, will be R. W. MeTavisli. Since lie was awarded the first, prize in the Great Northern Guineas in October. Hot Box has not earned any money but he- ran well enough in the Derby to indicate an early return to winning form in such a race as tlio one under discussion. Last Saturday at Takanini. Hot Box and Valamito ran six furlongs well in 1.16 1-5. and the time was only one-fifth outside the best of the morning. De> Friend has a stone more than the weight under which lie won the Plunkct Handicap, one mile, at Ellerslie, but. he docs not. appear to bo weighted out of a chance, as he is in form. Day Wind and Black Musk make a strung appeal. As winner of the Waiicinata Handicap, a mile and. a. quarter, on December 28, Miss Appellant must be given a. light-weight's chance, as she behaved in all respects like a I (rue stayer. Trial Handicap: As a two-vear-old. Pocket Venus
gave abundant promise, being placed on half a, dozen occasions bnt she has taken more time to become solid. At. the head of the Trial Handicap field of maidens at. Thames, she should still bo No. 1 at the judge, for her work lately has been excellent. On Saturday last she compiled the best figures for six furlongs at Takauini. 'Town Section ran third in the first division of the Waipa Plato but there was not much merit iu the eftorl. Cinnaio has disappointed too often and Hunter's Rose?-, although speedy, is believed still Io he green. Of the others, Orally and Kingcraft may make most improvement. Calcutta:
Two years ago at Thames, Calcutta began a series of five consecutive wins in hurdle, and highweight events, but last season ho was off the scene altogether. Now, after a. couple ol preliminary races, ho should again be tin interesting candidate in the Marumarua. Hurdles. Airarn scored a. win and three seconds over the battens on the Taranaki holiday circuit and she should be able to concede weight to most, of the field on Saturday. Mia Acrca. is speedy but. not always a reliable jumper. Tooley Street's Turn? Tooley Street has been going very well on the Ellerslie tracks and his turn cannot be far off. On Saturday, he ran half a mile with Marie’s Acre in 4S 4-s’s, and with 7.9 in the; Flying Handicap lie appears to be wellplaced. He showed form unexpectedly in the Cheltenham Handicap at. the mid-spring meeting of the Auckland Club and has improved a good deal since then. Llangollen carried 8.9 'when she ran second to Palustre in the Electric Handicap, and Mon Acre, with 7.1, was third in a very close finish. Now, Mon Acre meets Llangollen. six lb better. Tosh did not meet with much success on the Taranaki circuit, but. Galilee will not have to make measurable improvement to win. following on her third in the Railway Handicap. Tepoto has won on the Thames track and Valimeen is very speedy. This is a. very open event, but the best, may include Tooley Street, Galilee and Mon Acre. Hack Cup: The last winner of the Thames Hack Cup, Melvanui, is at the head of this year’s list. Master Appellant and Devon were third and fourth respectively in the Waitemata Handicap, and Devon comes in three lb better over a shorter distance. May Song may need a race before being seen at her best. On their showings for the major places in the Hack Cup at the Waipa meeting. Nuipapa and Royal Abb should show up well, and Eastern Heir will always be dangerous in a race of this kind. Bonstar may be worth watching in the race. Master Appellant and Royal Abb should be fancied.
Puriri Handicap: Consistently fair performances lately by Sir Robin will gain him friends for the Puriri Handicap and at the weights he may do better than Maxam and Valdene, who are the form horses. Bronze Step’s showings for a very close second and a win at New Plymouth and Stratford will be duly noted. as also Kakarero’s successful effort at To Rapa. Lornacre’s Chance:
Lornacro’s second to Respectful in the Glasgow Handicap was indicative of an early win and his chance may he the Borough Handicap against recent winners Dutch Girl, Poland and others. Jack Tar's second to Royal Bachelor at Te Rapa entitles him to most respect among the 8.0 division, and he may prove the hardest to beat with a. good horseman in the saddle. Open Race: — The Tapu Handicap is another very open race but possibly the best fancied will be Valdenc, Pirate King an.l Sen Acre. YEARLING SALES.
AUSTRALIAN BUYERS ACTIVE
WELLINGTON, January 18
The National yearling sales at Trentham, to-day, attracted a large and representative attendance of buyers, with a. number of overseas sportsmen also present, and assisting the market. Trotting MEETINGS - ™ COME
January 2S, February I—Nelson.1 —Nelson. January 26, 28 —Forbury Park.
Horsepower: Horsepower was being condemned as a. failure, but his form at Timarn suggests that he may make good.
Sir Tony: Sir 'Tony, racing in Auckland, is a promising young trotter by Great Bingen from. Lady Chenault, and was bred by Mr .1. R. McKenzie, from whom ho was purchased last April by Messrs E. R. Vernail and R. Chilcott. Sir Tony has had a. little raging experience, which should be ot advantage when next he starts.
Logan Pointer Breed: Results of the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday were notable for the success of descendants of Logan Pointer, particularly through the female line. Bayard, Resistance. Saute Fe and Llanvabon are from mares by Logan Pointer, while Kewpio's .Jewel is by Jewel Pointer, one of the best racing sons of the imported sire. Logan Pointer was bred by Mr J. E. Montgomery, California, and imported by F. Holmes in 1915. In the
1921-22 season. Logan Pointer shared with Wildwood' Junior the leading sire honours, .and he was head of the list in the next six seasons. He was by Star Pointer, 1.59.1, by Brown Hal, who appears also in the lines of Jack Potts, from Effie Logan, by Durfee, from Ripple. Logan Pointer, who died in 1923, sired Harold Logan, holder of the world two-mile race record —4.12 2-5.
