Auckland. December 28—Westland. December 31, January 2— Wairarapa December 31, Jan, 2 —Greymouth. December 31, Jan. 2—Hawke’s Bay.
Condition Right: Forest Acre is hearing a healthy appearance, and should lack nothing on the score of condition when called upon to race again.
Woodville Team: F. W. Davis intends to leave Woodville for Auckland next week and he is taking Courtcraft, Pern, Lutanist, Silver Stick, and Coronation. P. Atkins will do the stable’s riding at Ellerslie.
Rehandicap: For his win in the Gothard Memorial Handicap at Woodville, Gay Son has been rehandicapped lib. in the Christmas Handicap on the first day of the Auckland Racing Club s summer meeting. His weight is now 8.3. For Auckland:
Wotan is to go to Ellerslie to contest the Auckland Cup and the A.R.C. Handicap. It was originally intended to race him at Woodville, but the smallness of the stakes and the risk of incurring a rehandicap caused the idea to be abandoned. He has made good progress since racing at Feilding. Dictate: Dictate’s failure at Hororata was not a good augury for his Auckland trip, but it is easy for a. horse to lose on the sharp turns at Hororata. Dictate is in the Auckland Cup, but it is probable that he will be reserved for shorter races at the meeting.
Turned Out: Rona Bay, who broke down before the last Te Aapa meeting, has been turned out. There are doubts about her racing again. This is bad luck for the Matamata trainer, R. H. Martin, who appeared to have a. good stake earner for the season in this little mare.
Esquire: The Foxbridge two-year-old Esquire has come on fast durnig the last few weeks and will probably make his first appearance at the approaching meeting at Ellerslie. Although a trifle undersized, Esquire is very compactly built, while he is bred the right way to gallop. Peerless:
Plans for Peerless are to race her in the Manawatu Cup on Christmas Eve prior to the Great Northern Derby. Owing to the accident to S. Wilson, another rider will have to be obtained for her at Ellerslie. Peerless may go directly from Auckland to Sydney on January 6, provided her form at Auckland comes up to expectations.
Jockeys' Engagements: W. J. Broughton has contracted to ride Arctic King and members of A. J. Julian’s stable at Ellerslie, his Railway Handicap mount being Rollicker. B. H. Morris’s two mounts at Auckland are The Buzzer and possibly Smoke Screen. One of the busiest riders over the holidays will be the Ellerslie horseman H. N. Wiggins. He intends being at Awapuni (first day), Ellerslie, and Taranaki (second day). He is already booked for Birthday Boy and Disdain at Auckland, while he is to pilot members of T. R. George’s stable at Awapuni. P. Atkins is concentrating on Auckland and Awapuni, and at Ellerslie he has contracted to ride Courtcraft, Padishah, Beaulivre, Coronation, Gay Son, and one of F. Davis’s youngsters in the two-year-old handicap. A. C. Messervy has been engaged to ride Knight of Australia in the Auckland Cup.
WAIPA RACES. THE CHIEF EVENTS. [special to “star.”] AUCKLAND, December 14. Because of its proximity to the Ellerslie Christmas meeting and the fact that it is being held on such a good trying-out ground as Te Rapa’s racecourse, the Waipa Club’s meeting is attracting more than ordinary attention. Ten of the acceptors for the Te Awamutu Cup remain at present in the Auckland Cup. Until a bad gallop on Saturday perturbed his connections, Birthday Boy, on the strength of his creditable third in the Alison Cup, was selected generally as the likely favourite for the Te Awamutu Cup, but the result of his trials this week will have to be awaited before fears are dispelled or confirmed. The latter eventuality would be very unfortunate, for he had made fine improvement since his victory in the Claudelands High-weight last
month. Probably there is no cause for deep anxiety, and Birthday Boy will not start on Saturday unless his trainer is convinced of his ability to do himself justice. The upper half of the handicap is expected to provide the best alternative to success by the brother to Limarch. Mazir won the Hamilton Handicap, one and a-quarter miles, from Valamito, Master Brierly, Du Maurier and Jonathan, all of whom are to join issue again in the Te Awamutu Clip. Mazir is asked to meet Valamito and Du Maurier five lb. worse; Master Brierly, nine lb. and Jonathan, a. stone worse, in view of the fact that the last-mentioned horse won the Waikato Cup less than a month ago and later ran third to Round Up in the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Ellerslie, he is nicely placed in his present good condition. Arctic King nufy be below his best following his road accident at Trentham. Dictate’s recent form in the South Island has been very moderate, nor are Gay Rose and Dark Shadow in winning vein, although Dark Shadow, in his last three races, was prominent till the final stage of the contest. The racing should have improved him, and compared with his winning weight, 7.11, in the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Ellerslie a year ago, his 7.10 in this field is not burdensome. Barring accidents or bad news, Birthday Boy will remain the pre-post favourite.
» There is a strong field in the Flying Handicap, headed by Llangollen, who appears to be as capable of carrying big weights in open company as she was among the hacks. However, an impost of 9.4 will test her. On the second day of the Waikato meeting, she beat Te Monowai by a head, and now meets the other two and a-half lb. worse. As it was Te Monowai’s first race of the season, she may show enough improvement, with ordinary luck, to score on Saturday. Marie’s Acre is near his best, and doubts about Te Hero are gradually being dispersed. Tosh has had the racing to justify the expectation of early improvement on his home track, and Farland, following his win in the Cambridge Handicap, was runner-up to Majority in the Ngataringa Handicap at ’ Ellerslie, Tosh being fourth. Another light-weight who will be noticed is Tepoto, a winner over six and seven furlongs at the recent Ellerslie meeting. Tepoto is a greatly-improv-ed mare who will soon make her presence felt in open company. The choice between Te Hero, Te Monowai and Tepoto may be difficult.
VALICARE DEAD
SYDNEY. December 13.
Pat Osborne suffered a severe loss through the death of the good mare Valicare, within a few hours of her giving birth to a filly yesterday. Valicare was sent to New Zealand, to Nightraid, in 1930, in the hope of getting a Phar Lap or a Nightmarch, but only a moderate performer, The Raider, came from the union. Valicare made another trip to New Zealand in 1935, resulting in the filly now in Payten’s Randwick stables.
Trotting
MEETINGS TO COME December 26—Ashburton. December 26—Wairarapa. December 26 —Gore. December 26, 27—Westport. December 27, 29, 31—Auckland. December 29—Reefton. December 31—Winton. January 2, 3—Canterbury Park. January 5, 6—Greymouth. January 14—Cambridge. January 14—Timaru. January 26, 28—Forbury Park. January 28, February I—Nelson.1 —Nelson.
Another Change: The Winton Trotting Club has adopted the single pool system for its annual meeting, in lieu of win and place.
Big Team: M. Stewart, who won at Claudelands with Navy Blue, now has 18 horses in his charge, recent additions being Tommy McElwyn, True Trust, Bayard and Civic. He has taken over a property at Te Rapa, where tracks are being formed. For Australia: Great Admiral and Starwyn, which raced in the colours of Mr. G. J. Barton, have been sold and will leave for Australia shortly. W. J, O’Shea, trainer of Lawn JJerby, secured the Ameri-can-bred horse Starwyn for a friend in Sydney, and the horse will be put to the stud. Although he has not come up to expectations as a racing proposition, Starwyn, a five-year-old bay horse by Mr. McElwyn from Sun Star, has an excellent pedigree and he may yet redeem himself in his new sphere. Great Admiral, an eight-year-old brown gelding by Nelson Bingen from Eyre, will be raced in Western Australia.
For Auckland:
Two Canterbury pacers, both of them likely to qualify for the next New Zealand Trotting Cup, may clash in the Auckland Trotting Cup at Christmas. They are Fine Art and Horse Power, and both are sired by Jack Potts, a grand stayer and the dominating sire in the trotting sport today. While Fine Art has built up an imposing record this season, overshadowing Horse Power, he has had far more racing. Though he is undoubtedly a fine pacer, there should not be much between the pair over two miles. Ferry Post has been freely mentioiied as another young Canterbury pacer likely to race well at Auckland, but he is suffering from lameness and is not in work at present. Mr. G. J. Barton’s sole representative at the meeting will probably be Horse Power, who is likely to be driven by S. A. Edwards.
Toorak and Cqlonel Grattan, who have been exasperatingly unlucky in filling minor places this season, will probably be sent to Auckland this month to try and break the hoodoo.
