LORD GOWRIE
SHORT VISIT TO AUCKLAND.
[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, September 19. The Governor-General of Australia (Lord Gowrie), who has been on a holiday visit to England, arrived at Auckland from Vancouver by the Niagara and is the guest of the Gov-ernor-General of New Zealand (Viscount Galway) at Government House until his departure for Sydney tomorrow night. Lord Galway made a special trip to Auckland to meet him, arriving by train this morning, and will leave again for Wellington tomorrow night. ' '■
Lord Gowrie, who is accompanied by Squadron-Leader Moir, Royal Australian Air Force, as A.D.C., was met aboard the liner by Captain R. Stuart French, A.D.C. to the GovernorGeneral. and the Attorney-General (Hon. H. G. R. Mason), representing the Government. A guard of honour drawn from the Royal New Zealand Artillery, with the band of the Auckland Regiment, was mounted on Princes wharf, and was inspected by Lord Gowrie.
The Deputy-Mayor of Auckland (Mr J. A. C. Allum), acompanied by the Town Clerk (Mir J. Melling), paid a call at Government House in the afternoon and expressed regret that the Mayor (Sir Ernest Davis) was prevented by indisposition from welcoming Lord Gowrie. In an interview, Lord Gowrie said that in London he had a conference with the Prime Minister (Mr Chamberlain) and transacted business on behalf of Australia, at the Dominions Office. He attended the unveiling of the King of the Australian national war memorial in France, which he described as a very beautiful monument. As an officer of the Fifth Army, he well remembered the hilltop on which it stood as it had been under very different conditions. He was also present in Paris during the visit of the King and Queen. The enthusiasm of the French people, he said, could not have been greater, and the city was marvellously decorated. It was evident that the King and Queen had won all hearts in France, as well as in Britain, by their personal charm and the happy home life which surrounded them.
