October 29—Rangitikei. October 29 —Rotorua-Bay of Plenty. ■ NOTES FROM RICCARTON.

[SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] A. E. Ellis and Floodtide: CHRISTCHURCH, September 5. There is every possibility of A. E. Ellis making the trip to Melbourne to ride Floodtide in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. He torday received a tempting offer to go across, and as the horse’s weights are 8.11 and 8.8 respectively, Ellis 1 does not anticipate any trouble as far as riding at the weights is concerned. Ellis will, no doubt accept the offer as at the weights at which he can ride, he would not be likely to have any attractive mounts at the Dunedin, Wellington and New Zealand Cup meetings which he will miss if he goes over. Trainer Retires:

T. Lloyd, the well-known Riccarton trainer, and for many years back a leading trainer in the Manawatu district, has retired from his, profession owing to ilFhealth, which, although not keeping liim from his work round the stable, has prevented him going very much to the tracks in recent months. Before taking over the position as private trainer to Dr. M. G. .Louisson, some nine years) ago, he has had many successes, spme of his winners being Hoylake, Tout le Monde. Desert -Song, Invoice, The Masqueiader, and although the stable has not done well in recent years, there were some £oung horses got ready by Lloyd who are likely to be soon doing their owner good service. There are Royal Pat, Great Baby, Miss Otis, and Benevolent, and they have been, handed over to C. Emerson to train. Benevolent is a two-year-old Dy Pere from Dignified, and cost Dr. Louisson 650 guineas as a yearling at Trehtham. Dictate:

Dictate is now booked to leave for Melbourne, and if arrangements can be made l)e will go by a cargo steamer from the'Bluff this week. His departure was delayed owing to various reasons outside racing interests, but everything has now been fixed up, and the trip has been finalised. New Recruit:

An effort .is being made to convert Nightdress into a. jumper, but as far as he has gone in his schooling essays, difficulty is likely to be encountered to get him to take kindly to his new tasks. There is no better looking hors'e than - this Nightmarch foui>year-old, but there is something amiss in his racing demeanour, and it is thought that a course of jumping may improve him. That is, of course, if Nightdress elects to take on the game. Greymouth-owned:

The Sandwichman continues to give pleasing displays ovei- hurdles, and it is hoped to race him at Ashburton and Geraldine. Several other novice jumpers, including Dividend and Aymon, will probably be also raced at the early spring meetings. Wild Talk:

Although it was not possible to send Wild Talk to Wanganui to contest the Wanganui Guineas, in which she must have had an excellent chance, it is hoped that she will be well enough to attend the Dunedin spring meeting.

Grigg Stakes: Ten two-year-olds have been left in the John Grigg Stakes, the first two-year-old race in the South Island to be decided at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s spring meeting on Saturday of next week. These include Master Hotspur’ and Winning .Rival from Riccarton, who are considered likely to fight out the issue of the southerners. King Gustavo and Nigger Boy may offer strong opposition. TO-DAY’S TRACK WORK RICCARTON, September 6. At Riccarton to-day, there was a lot of fast work, but only a few horses were sent against the watch.. Really serious galloping will start this weekend. Pipiwhauroa gave a dashing display over four hurdles. There is no doubt about this grey gelding’s ability as a jumper. The Sandwichman, and Patuma were companions in a similar task, executed in fast time. Dictate is leaving for Bluff to-mor-row, to be shipped from there io Melbourne.

JOHN GRIGG STAKES. FINAL FORFEITS. ASHBURTON, September 5. After the final forfeits the following remain in the John Grigg Stakes, of £300; for two-year-olds: four furlongs:— G. R. Hunter’s b f, by Boyden— Boherbec. J. R, McKenzie’s br c, by Lord Warden —Knocklyn. G. H. Paul’s ch c Lord Seadown, by Lord Warden —Frenzied Finance. C. N. Draper’s ch f Bere Regis, by Lord Warden—Anthem. E. Hay’s b c Master Hotspur, by Ringmaster—lmpetuous. W. J. Dore’s ch c King Gustavo, by Gustavo—Call Bird'. Sir Charles Clifford’s br f Winning Rival, by Bulandshar—Rivalry. H. D. Greenwood’s b £ Cyprine, by Posterity—Cymene. W. J. Riddell’s b c Nigger Boy, by Nigger Minstrel—Spearmaid. H. Delargy’s br g Brandon, by Royden —Bran Pie. The race will be run at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting on September 17.

AVONDALE STAKES. THE FEILD DISCUSSED. [SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] AUCKLAND, September 5. This month’s contest for the Avondale Stakes will be the 40th renewal of the race, and -the present field is very strong—numerically. The record of winners, however, would tend to dampen the hope that a champion is likely to emerge from the event a winner. The average of performance of the horses on the honours board is high, but, with three or four exception, not 4)16 best. The Lucky Alice colt and the Fern Bird filly, who were

Jeft in on the release o£ the forfeits list, have since been taken out, and the number is now 30. Already, there are indications of several of the aspirants being winners early in their first season, unless there comes along a “smasher ’to down them all in turn. The two-year-old parade at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting has given the only opportunity for racegoers to sum up *the youngsters, and although conditions were so unfavourable that a number of trainers kept their charges in their boxes, the run proved interesting. The winner was Noble Fox, a gelding by Foxbridge, a bold galloper and straight goer, revealing pluck in a quite serious finish, with Princess Vai, Hunto and Gay Movie. Princess Vai, a smart daughter of Vaals, is also a half-sister to Hot Box, who last Spring had four runs, including the Avondale Stakes, before striking the form that secured him four wins in a row. The prediction is offered, however, that Princess Vai will earn some money sooner than did Hot Box, although she may not attain to his undoubted high class. Hunto is a very attractive colt from Dodo, an All Red mare bred by Mr J. B. Gaisford and half-sister to Marqueteur and Half Time. Mr G. Carrington bred and owns him, and he should make a fine success of his first season. Another filly who put up a bold showing against the colts at the Hunt parade was Gay Movie, daughter of Sargon and half-sister to Gay Talkie, who went abroad after proving himself a fine galloper in the Dominion. Gay Movie covered extra ground in her run and she was doing her best, but it was a creditable debut. Gay Movie has room to develop, and with a few more months over her head she will be a handsome type. So much for those who were forward enough a fortnight ago to attract attention from the casual observer. Takanini track watchers are keen on Oreleio, the Limond-Waterwings youngster, who has put up some smart sprinting trials. As brother’ to Agrion and Waikare (to mention Iris rich relations only),Jie is well-accredited on the score of breeding. He is a compact colt, built similarly to Hunto and his reputation will ensure strong support for him at Avondale, especially as he will be found to be well forward there. He cost Mr T. Impey lOOOgns. as a yearling. One who has not emerged from her nursery at Matamata is Greek Queen, by Foxbridge from Exaggeration, who raced successfully for Mr Impey and later for Mr N. Grafas, who oawns the filly. Greek Queen is reported to be particularly smart, and on that account speculators will scrutinise her carefully when she appears in the birdcage. Exaggeration is by Lucullus from J-lolymond, by Limond —Holyrood (imp.), by Symington, a line that is highly prized at ,Home. The Foxbridge—Lady Marie filly, as half-sister to the Gay family—Sheila, Blonde, Shiek .and Brunette, as well as Marie’s Acre, can hardly fail to be useful, and so far her development has fieen satisfactory. In her case, time may be all-important, as in that of the colt by Fox bridge—Gazalie, a. late foal.

At Ellerslie are two massive youngsters who are being allowed time to develop. High Caste is half-brother to Stretto, herself an Avondale Stakes winner, but her relative is not in the race. Nor is Konneta, a filly by Bulandshai- from Sunny Hours, who also produced 1 Sergia and Karl. Silver Stick and Silver Bat are not to be confused. The former- is F. W. Davis’s hope in the Avondale Stakes, and is by Beau.Pere from Silver Rule, by Chief Ruler from Silver Link, the dam being a sister to the 1933 stakes winner, Whenuakura. Silver Bat is by Cricket Bat from Reckless, a half-sister to Tankard, who was a brilliant two-year-old, but had a promising careercut short by an accident. After the exposition of early speed by the Beau Peres of last season, the tribe, will be expected to cary on the new tradition. Of Silver Stick’s ability to carry out his part there is at present no doubt. Others who may be tested at the Avondale ground are Beau Repair®, the expensive and twice-bought son of Modiste 11., and of whom very good reports have come from Te Rapa. However, he may not be as forward as some others this month. Then there is Beau Vite, son of Dominant, and' so closely related to Peter Jackson, Gaine Carrington and Wotan, the respective dams being sisters. In the case of Beau Vite also, any precocity may not be much sought, in view of his staying qualifications.

Algerian is by Beau Pore from Zarene, and half-brother to Lowenherg. Kobi is stable-mate of Silver Stick and is by Bulandshar from Lucinette, dam of the speedy but unsound Flammarion and descendant of the great Hilda. La. Vie, a. fine (illy, claims Night Raid and Royal Flavour as parents and War Lord, being by Lord Warden from Vennachar* is halfbrother to Scratchmere Scar. Anopheles is a. filly by Vaals from Marshland, and half-sister to Pa lustre. Dark Legion is Australian-bred, by Dark Fox—Our Legion, and is a. colt, bay in colour. Another Australian-bred colt is Buccaneer, by Constant Son — Girton Girl, who is a. sister to Acre. Varimond is by Limond from Variable, by Pombal —Malley; Karatoki is by Foxbridge—Miss Rewa; Royal Traj r is half-sister by Tea Tray to Royal Appellant and On Parade. Bonny Gaze is a filly by Resinous—Gazgleam; Foxsen is a filly by Foxbridge— Senorita and related to Speedmint: Hunting Cape is a filly by Cape Horn — Hunting Moss; Meliora is by Bambury—Teels, by Lord Quex —Lovematch, who was another sister to Left and Dominant. Biddy Girl is by Oration from Biddy Comet; Mayfair, a filly by Hunting Song—Lady Whirlwind: Little Star, by Surveyor—Betty Comet.

The Wanganui results may have an effect on the opinions of the field, but at the moment, Orelio, Greek Queen, Gay Movie and Silver Stick appeal most. FLOODTIDE FOR AUSTRALIA AUCKLAND, September 6. Floodtide was scratched for all engagements at the Avondale meeting at 8.30 p.m., yesterday. He is to go to Melbourne for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, and will probably leave next week.
