, CHATHAM CUP FINAL. [PIB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] -• WELLINGTON, September 4. In the presence of the Governor--1 General (Lord Galway) and a party ’ from Government House, and before - an attendance of about 5000, Water- ‘ side (Wellington) beat Mosgiel (Dunedin) by 4 goals to 0 in the final of the Chatham Cup competition at the Basin Reserve, Wellington on Saturday afternoon. The teams were even Ily matched and Association football ’ of a. high standard was seen. Waterside thoroughly, deserved its * win, asi the team adapted itself to the 5 conditions better than the South Is- - landers. A strong wind and frequent > showers made accurate passing diffi- • cult, but both teams kept the bah low, and maintained their balance splendidly on the greasy surface. Mosgiel played close together, and although they had the wind behind them when they attacked for long periods in the first spell, they were not able to pierce the Waterside defence, and an early goal gave the Wellington team a slender lead at half time. The second half was begun at the same fast pace, but towards the end of the game Mosgiel had begun to tire and Waterside enjoyed a period of attack when only the goalkeeper seemed able to hold up the Wellington team’s forwards. The New Zealand schoolboy Soccer ] players, so far undefeated on their j Australian tour, were too strong and £ fast for the Victorians. Their approach t work was something the Victorian } boys had not seen before. The New Zealand boys kept attacking continu- j ously, especially in the second half q when they had the wind with them, £ But for the good work of the Vic- c torians’ goalie (Howard), the New; a Zealanders would have doubled the ] score.

The visitors’ outstanding players were Taylor, Yoeman, and Havey (full back). The latter robbed the Victorians of all likely scoring efforts. The scores were: New Zealand four (Yeoman 2, Irvine and Paul), Victoria nil. WESTLAND DEFEATS BULLER. Making the best of the scoring opportunities, the Westland Association fotball team beat Buller by 3 goals to 2, in the Emms Shield match, at Ngakawau on Saturday. Buller made a valiant attempt to retain the trophy, which it has held for many years, and had a slight territorial advantage, but the forwards were not acurate with their shooting. The score at half-time was 3 goals -to 1, and in the second half Buller tried hard to pull the game out of the fire, without success. J. Cowie (Westland left-half) was the outstanding player on the field, and R. Scott and R. Smith in the visitors’ team, were the best forwards. T. Blythe and G. Orman were very solid Buller half-backs, and W. White played well at full-back. Of a good set of Buller forwards, P. Taylor and C. Orman showed out most. The game was one of the best played in the district for a long period, with the pace on all the way and excellent form was displayed by both teams. W.F.A. MEETING. The weekly meeting of thp Westland Football Association was attended by Messrs W. Rafferty (chairman), W. McNeish, J. Craig, C. Hodson and J. Wood. The New Zealand Council wrote, stating that the Taylorville Club’s action in leaving the field was likely to bring the game into disrepute, and •that the Council had censured the club for doing so. It was decided to write to the Council pointing out that the Westland Association was not notified by the Canterbury Association of the doings of the Taylorville Club, also pointing out that the matter should have been dealt with by the Association before going to the New Zealand Council; It was decided that the letter be received, but that, in the absence of any report from the Canterbury Asociation, the Association should not accept the censure of the Club.

An account of £1 was passed for payment.

It, was decided to notify Canterbury Association that the most suitable date for a. representative game for the Dewar Cup would be September 17.— It. was decided to appoint Mr C. Hodson as sole selector for the junior team, as .the co-selector. Mr J. Paton, has left, the district.
