WEEK-END ACCIDENTS
KILLED BV CAR. [PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, July 17. Knocked down by a motor-car at the corner of Brooklyn road and Nairn street on Saturday night, shortly after 7 o'clock, William Samuel Ridler, a retired railwayman and a well-known resident of Wellington, received severe injuries, death being practically instantaneous. Ridler was president of the Athletic Rugby Football Club and was a member of the Wellington Bowling Club. He was a senior footballer in his younger days, and was the first secretary of tlie Petone Club, later playing for Athletic. ELDERLY WOMAN KILLED. DUNEDIN, July 17. An elderly woman, Elizabeth Cullen, single, a resident of Palmerston, was killed instantly late this afternoon when she was struck by a motor-car near Good wood. She suffered a broken neck and a fractured leg.
The driver of the car, a Dunedin man, was apparently dazzled by the lights of a car which he had just passed. SHOT IN SHOULDER. AUCKLAND, July 17. A bullet wound in the left shoulder was received by Jack Orpin, aged 18, of Mangere Crossing, through the accidental discharge of a pea rifle he was carrying. It is reported that he tripped and that during his fall the rifle discharged. He was admitted to the Auckland Hospital, where his condition is regarded as satisfactory. JUMP FROM EXPRESS. AUCKLAND, July 16. A remarkable escape from death or serious injury was experienced by Robert Jones, aged 20, of Tuhikaramea Road, Hamilton, when he fell or jumped from the Limited express as it was passing through Pukekohe for Auckland about 8.30 this morning. It is believed that Jones intended to travel from Frankton by the 7.23 train, but mistakenly boarded the 7.10, the Limited, which does not stop at Pukekohe. It is believed that he threw his luggage out and jumped from the express. He sustained concussion, a. deep cut on his head, and facial abrasions. Part of his luggage was addressed to Bombay, five miles from Pukekohe. He was attended by a Pukekohe doctor and brought by train to Auckland. The hospital reported early this afternoon that his condition is satisfactory and that no fractures are apparent.
CHILD DROWNED. WELLINGTON, July 16. Terence John Figg, the three-year-old son of Frederick John. Figg, of Kaiteratahi, fell into a sump-hole in the backyard of his home this morning, being drowned. CHRISTCHURCH CASUALTIES. CHRISTCHURCH, July 16. Three people received injuries necessitating their admission to hospital yesterday. They were Mr A. C. Kendrick, of Timaru, Mr Alfred James Wilson, of Annat, and Nita Joy, Woodthorpe, aged six, of 45 Braddon Street, Addington. All three were reported to be progressing satisfactorily. Kendrick was the victim of an unusual accident. While travelling along the Main South Road near Church Corner one of the front wheels of his motor-car came off and the vehicle struck a pole, being badly damaged. Kendrick was admitted l to hospital, with head and l facial injuries. Wilson suffered head and leg injuries when the motor-cycle he was riding skidded on the Yaldhurst Road. He received a fractured left knee cap. The small girl, Nita Woodthorpe, was knocked diown by a car near the corner of Selwyn Street and Crescent Road, Addington. She received head, arm and leg injuries. CAR STRIKES TREE. HASTINGS, July 18. Two men suffered injuries when the car in which they were travelling struck a tree on Saturday evening. Their names are: Brett Monteliar, 50, slight concussion, and ’William Matthews, 50, head injuries. Both were taken to the hospital, Monteliar being able to go home yesterday. Matthews’ condition was reported, this morning as satisfactory. The car was extensively damaged.
