[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CAR KILLS JOCKEY. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 1. Fatal injuries were suffered by Lawrence William Pepperill, aged 18, a jockey, when he was struck by a car driven by Thomas E. Roberts, of Patea, a solicitor, near Haw era to-night. Pepperill was taken to the Haw era Hospital with a fracture of the base of the skull, and died about an hour later. INTOXICATED DRIVERS. WELLINGTON, July 1. Mr J. 11. Luxford, S.M., referred today to Ihe hea vier penalties imposed’ on motorists convicted of intoxication in charge of motor-cars as having been followed by a. diminution in this class of offence. George Howard Bennett, aged 23, a golf club maker, was before Mr Luxford for an offence of this nature. “Unfortunately, it is quite impossible to deal with these, matters by way of a line.” said Mr Luxford. He was glad to say that the Auckland Magistrates had taken the same view as he had. This was only the second case that, had come before the Court at Wellington within the last eight weeks. Bennett was sentenced to imprisonment for 14 days. His license was cancelled until May 31 next.
