BRITAIN’S 167 LIFEBOATS

ALL TO HAVE MOTORS, The new motor life-boat, launched at Cowes, brings the total fleet of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution to 167. This boat has now been taken to its station at Yarmouth. Isle of Wight. “Thirty of our present total are pulling and sailing boats, and the remaining 137 are motor-driven,” an official of the Institution said yesterday. “Within three years we hope to replace all the pulling and sailing boats. Last year we built 28 motor-vessels — more than ever before in one period of 12 months. “Many people think that the coming of the summer months means a slack season for lifeboatmen. Actually there is really no slack time thiough, out the year. Hardly a week passes when we do not save lives somewhere. “This year has been busy so far because of the stormy weather off various parts of the coast. Since the beginning of January there have been 124 launches on service and 207 lives have been rescued.

“The grand total of lives saved up to date since the Institution was founded in 1824 is 65,633. This gives an average of 11 a week over a period of 114 years.” _________
