MEXICAN UNREST
PRESIDENT TO RESIGN? [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN.—COPYRIGHT.] MEXICO CITY. May 16. The Mexican Government has moved troops into the inland States of Guanajuato and San Luis Potoso, as a precaution against possible uprisings. . The movements followed riots in Mexico City, in which Leftist students were driven from the university by armed police. Several were wounded. The university is considered by the Leftists as a Rightist stronghold. .. The newspaper “Hombre Libre prints a rumour that the President (General Cardenas) intends to resign. The two States into which troops have been moved contain some of the principal industrial areas of Mexico, with considerable mineral resources. BRITISH INTERESTS. [BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.] RUGBY, May 16. The surprise and regret of His Majesty’s Government at the decision of the Mexican Government to close its legation in Loudon was expressed by, Mr. R. A. Butler, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, in the House of Commons. In answer to a. question, he said he could not forecast any further action which might be undertaken, but the Government would naturally continue its best endeavours to . protect the substantial British commercial interests in Mexico. He expressed the hope that any efforts made by the British Government to secure a settlement with Mexico would be supported in all quarters of the House.
