DEATH. AT CROQUET
[PER press association.] OAMARU. April 26. The death occurred suddenly at the closing ceremony of the Gardens Croquet Club, of Mrs W. J. Wylie, president of the Awamoa Croquet Club.' and a prominent member of the North Otago Women’s Club. FISHERMAN’S BODY. CHRISTCHURCH, April 26. The body of John Henry Roberts, who was drowned 1 on. April 12, while fishing, was found washed up on'the rocks by some persons who were fishing round the Kaikoura reef. An inquest was hold before Mr J. Davidson, J.l’. 'A verdict was given that Roberts was accidentally drowned through his dinghy capsizing in a rough stki while fishing. So far, nothing has been seen of the body of the father of Roberts, who was drowned at the same time. BISHOP’S CAR STRIKES POLE. PALMERSTON NORTH, April 26. The Bishop of Wellington (Rt. RevH. St. Barbe Holland) had a fortunate escape from serious injury yesterday, when the car he was driving struck a pole on the main highway near Longburn. The Bishop was on his way to Feilding for the Anzac service. The read was very slippery and the car skidded several times before striking the pole. Bishop Holland was catapulted from tlie driving seat through the off-side front door, which was wrenched open by the impact. Bishop Holland suffered only a severe shaking. Later he was able to conduct the service. RABBITER SHOT. MASTERTON, April 26. A shooting accident occurred at Wangaehu, near Masterton, on Sunday afternoon, when Cyril Beard, middle-aged, married, employed in thewool store of Dalgety and Company, Wellington, was accidentally shot in the back.
Beard, in company with several companions, was out shooting rabbits, and when a .lad, M. N. Clark, of Masterton, was loading one of the rifles, it accidentally discharged, the bullet entering Beard’s back. The victim was : standing only a few yards away. Several hours later, after a strenuous journey through broken country and' in heavy rain, the injured man was admitted to a private hospital in Masterton. His condition this morning was reported to be satisfactory. I FOOTBALLER'S NECK BROKEN. HAMILTON, April 26. A fatal accident occurred during a practice football game at Ngaruawahia on Saturday when a young quartercast© Maori farm hand, Paul Halbert, aged 22, of Taupiri, suffered a fractured neck, from which he died in the .Waikato Hospital yesterday. He was playing for the Taupiri Rugby team in a trial game against pther Taupiri players. He had possession of the ball and was endeavouring to evade the opposition when he was tackled' and fell to the ground with his tackler on top of him. Halbert came from Wairoa and was a .relative of Bishop Bennett. FATAL SLIP IN PUMICE PIT. ; WHAKATANE, April 26. One man was killed and another in-
jured by a large slip in a at Pikowai, near Matata, just befoie 11 this morning. A contractor, Jesse Joseph Appleton, married, aged 42 with three children, was killed. A native named Heta, of Matata, uas bruised and suffered a cut, aim.
