TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME. April 23—Greymouth. April 23, 27—Avondale. April 29, 30—Danneyirke. April 28, 30—Reefton. Taxes etc.: The taxation payable to the Government by the Canterbury Jockey Club for its meeting this week amounts to £7550/16/7, exclusive of amusement tax, made up as follows: —Totalisator tax, £3573/10/7; dividend tax £3908 7/-, and stakes tax £6B/10/-. Unfamiliar Breeding: The maidep Far-East, who was raced at the Wairarapa meeting, has a most unfamiliar breeding. He is given as a three-year-old gelding by Hoturoa (Panmnre-Ortygia) from a mare by Gay Spark. He is owned by Mr. A. Watson, of Blenheim.

Riders at Avondale: Riding engagements announced for the Avondale meeting are: —W. H. Jones, Oriental Bay, Salesman: P. Fearn. High Tea. Electric Spear; R. J. Fearn, Te Takina; S. Tremain, Barrister; L. Clifford, Llangollen. KingSilver; C. G. Goulsbro, Vaal Star, Erndale, Balinavar, Race Call. Gay Rose;' N. Vaughan, Johnny Walls, Parquet, Inquisitor, Trevace, Gold Vaals, Milanion.

Juvenile Supremacy: The two-year-olds at Auckland at Easter did not. appear to have been up to the usual class and the high opinions Aucklanders hold of Hot Box were not borne out. The win of Russian Ballet shows that of the youngsters that were in commission late in the season, Defaulter is outstanding. One of the marked features of the autumn racing has been the entire absence of Beau Peres. It will be interesting to see whether they will train on next season.

Remaining at Riccarton: Tangled had been in work only six weeks when he raced at Riverton, but he had been feed and given occasional exercise during his summer holiday on his owner’s farm near Feilding. Improved by his run on Saturday he won in attractive fashion on Monday. Tangled will remain in S. Barr’s stable at Riccarton until after the Grand National steeplechase meeting.

Phenomenal Speed: Phenomenal speed was shown by Hunter’s Eve. who won the Wairarapa Nursery Handicap. . Beginning with rare brilliance she ran right away from Rakahanga in the early and middle stages of the race, and at. one time was about 10 lengths clear. She tired rapidly in the last furlong, and Rakahanga got to within half a length of her. Like the general run’ of Hunting Song horses, she revelled in the wet going. She must be one of the fastest two-year-olds in commission, and if she stays reasonably well should be a good winner next year.

Reefton Nominations: The. Reefton Jockey Club has received splendid nominations for its meeting to be held on April 28 and 30, at Reefton. Nineteen horses have been nominated in three of the trotting events, and 16 in the other. Eight have been nominated for the principal event the first day, and eleven the second day,, including Silver Ring, Monipere', Rebel Chief. Swordstick, Rabble and Roy Ban. Amount is a notable absentee the sprint events., Financiere is an interesting nomination for the meeting.

RACES AT OMOTO. PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW With splendid fields carded, averaging 10 horses a race, and the prospects bright for fine weather, the Greymouth Jockey Club will hold its second autumn race meeting on the Omoto racecourse to-morrow. Provided the weather remains fine, the Club should experience a highly successful meeting. Many fresh horses will be seen in action. The usual convenient train arrangements have been made, and the appointments, on the course, will be well up to the customary high standard. First class racing is assured, with the form revealed at Omoto last. Saturday, and at Kumara on Monday likely to prove a useful guide to speculators. The single pool system of betting will be used. Following is a review of the fields: 12.35: TRIAL HANDICAP, 6 furlongs.

The smallest field of the day, seven horses, will parade in the opening event. Love Affair, a three-year-old by Philamor, has shown any amount of pace, but so far six furlongs has proved too much for her. Gold Coat will be suited by the distance, and should be found finishing on. Patuma is a useful Cockpit maiden in A. S. Ellis’s stable, and will carry a lot. of support. Polistiiia appears to have improved in J. Stewart’s care, and the way she finished on over 5?. furlongs last Saturday, suggested that she is a good prospect here. Revealed form points to Polistina, Patuma and Gold Coat filling the places. 1.15: DOBSON TROT HANDICAP. 2.27 class. One mile. Atarau Queen .. scr Benew .. .. scr Colonel Wrack scr Wild Deer .. .. scr Kay Francis .. scr Azure .. .. 12 Lady Marigold scr Free Author .. 24 Peggy Petrova scr Harvest Gift .. 36 Prince. Travis .. ser Kate Bingen .. 48 Twelve horses will parade in the Dobson Trot, with Colonel Wrack, Wild Deer, Kay Francis and Azure (Blue Mountain King-Azaleas) newcomers. Azure should prove the pick of these. Atarau Queen showed speed last Saturday, and if she paces more evenly to-morrow, she may be in the money. Lady Marigold is another who looked likely last week, but bad beginnings spoilt any chance she had. Free Author will go a good mile on the grass, but a fast pace early may find him wanting over the later stages. Kate Bingen ran two useful seconds last Saturday at Omoto, but Harvest Gift won so easily last week that he will probably be best supported. Harvest Gift, Kate Bingen and Lady Marigold look the best prospects.

i. 55: RAILWAY HACK HANDICAP, 6i furlongs.

Drink-Up won so well over a mile at Oamaru, that the Tea Tray gelding ' will carry plenty of support in whatJ ever race he is produced, in to-mor-row. Gilford has raced well, without . being a winner. He was a good sel cond to Amount over this distance S last Saturday, but disappointed at Kumara...l£ he has freshened up, in the meantime he will go a good race. Ro- . tokino has not been in winning form recently. Great. Memory won well at Kumara pver a furlong less, but may , find this class too good. Glenacre was left at Omoto last week, but won well enough at Kumara to suggest that he will win again before the end of the circuit. The distance will not trouble him, Owlsgleam showed promise at Kumara of returning to form, in running second to Glenacre. Gayspear ran a good race last week at Omoto. Patuma and Princess Margaret. are hardly up to this class yet. Drink Up, Glenacre, and Gilford should monopolise the betting. 2.35: PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP, 1| miles.

Eight horses are down to contest the President’s Handicap, but. at least two, Gasmask and The Sandwichman, would greatly surprise were they to succeed in this class. Contract failed to stay this journey at Kumara. Windward runs out a solid mile, and will have his supporters. He was fourth over seven furlongs at Omoto last Saturday, and won over six and ahalf furlongs at Kumara. Monipere is not heavily weighted at 8.0. He is in great order at present and was never asked for his best to win by six lengths at. Kumara. Potent, ran second to Rebel Chief last. Saturday, and second to Monipere at.Kumara. Both should hold the Potoa gelding safe again. Potent would be preferred in ; the mile hack. Rebel Chief disappoint- ; ed at Kumara, after his easy victory ' at Omoto last week. He showed signs ; of soreness at Kumara, and provided he has recovered, he will be a strong contender, even with 9.4. Roy Bun was just, headed out of second place at Omoto last Saturday, but should improve on that performance to-morrow. ' Monipere looks the pick of the field. I with Roy Bun and Rebel Chief likely 1 to be next in demand. I I 3.15: ( RUNANGA HANDICAP, 5£ furlongs. !

Amount, having won three races on end, on the circuit, holds pride of place in the Runanga. Handicap, with 9.9, and even with that impost will have many friends. Silver Lark, Rebel Star. Copyist, and The Sandwichman would have to show marked improvement Io have a chance. Paper Note ran a good second to Amount last week, and with the. weights now 131bs in Paper Note’s favour, the mare should heat Amount. Pelmet, has done nothing sufficiently noteworthy to encourage support, over Paper Note. Delium did not race well last week. Arrowrose has run a second and a third on the circuit, without showing, her usual dash. Acceptable’s recent running suggests his having a big chance here. He ran third behind Alma and Janet Gaynor at Waimate over six furlongs, beating Paper Note on the same terms. Now the Tea Tray gelding meets Paper Note on 121bs better terms, but he would be better suited by a longer journey. Form suggests Paper Note. Acceptable and Amount as likely to monopolise Hie betting.

3.55: OMOTO TROT HANDICAP, 3.2 class, one mile and a-quarter. Atarau Queen .. scr kenew .. scr Azure .. .. scr Wild Deer .. scr Colonel Wrack .. scr Harvest. Gift .. 12 Kay Francis .. scr Kate Bingen .. 24 Lady Marigold .. scr Big Nelson .. 48 Peggy Petrova scr Little Gordon .. 48 Prince Travis .. scr Superb .. 48 Big Nelson’s two wins at Kumara will gain him many friends for the Omoto Trot, but up to now he has been a different proposition in harness. Both races at Kumara were in saddle. Form in the first trot should give a useful pointer on the chances of most of those accepted for this event. Kate Bingen, Azure, Lady Marigold, Big Nelson and Harvest Gift look the best of the 14 horses that will parade, with preference for Harvest Gift, Kate Bingen, and Big Nelson.

4.35: AHAURA HACK HANDICAP, one mile.

The mile hack has drawn a splendid field of 12 horses. Windward, Drink Up, Emmeline Girl, Glenacre. and Clubman are recent winners in the field, while Potent, Owlsgleam, Gasmask and Gold Boy have been in the places. This should be a splendid betting race. Potent, Windward, Drink Up, Emmeline Girl, Gasmask, Clubman and Gold Boy will all have support, with preference for Drink Up (if reserved), Emmeline Girl, and Clubman.

5.15: FAREWELL HANDICAP, 6| furlongs.

The final event, of the day has drawn 11 acceptors, and provided all face the starter, it should prove , a fitting finale. Wine Card, Rebel Chief, Acceptable and Monipere look the pick of the field. Rebel Chief wbiild have to bo seriously considered if he were, reserved. Wine Card won so easily over seveti furldHgs last week, that she will probably he favourite

again. She is a speedy sprinter, who handles the turning track well. Monipere, granted an even break at the start, would be a danger, but Acceptable will probably provide most op--position. This once classy sprinter has been racing well, and favourably early should finish in the' money. In a good betting pool, the favoured’ division should be Wine Card, Acceptable and Monipere. AVONDALE RACES. TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME. [special to “star.”] AUCKLAND, April 22. For the Avondale meeting to-mor-row and Tuesday, large fields are engaged. Bad-mannered Racehorses: “That is a very strong letter,” said Mr J. Ft. McKenzie when a report on the unruly behaviour of the horse Young Ardgour at the Cromwell meeting was read at a meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association yesterday. The report stated the horse was nearly the cause of a bad accident. He was on the limit, and the five horses behind him had almost to pull up to keep out of trouble. The horse was seven years old, and was unlikely. to mend his ways. The iboard decided to ask the owner to show cause why Young Ardgour, should not be placed, on the schooling list. A report from the Wellington Trotting Club on the bad behaviour of Fenella and Sewana at the start of their races was also considered, and the owners are to be advised that some improvement will be expected of these horses when next they race. • INTER-DOMINION TROTS.
