INTOXICATED DRIVER
YOUTH GRANTED PROBATION. fPEB PRESS XRBOCIATION-] AUCKLAND. April 21. “It is only your youth . that stops me from dealing very severely with you. This case would have meant a £lOO fine, if I had been dealing with an adult,” said the Magistrate (Mr. Hunt), to Eric Douglas Mathieson, 18, motor salesman, who admitted being in a state of intoxication, while in charge of a car on the Ponsonby Road, last night. He was convicted and, placed on probation for two years. His license is to be cancelled for 12 months, and he was also ordered to pay for the damage done to the car. The police said that about eleven o’clock last night the conductor of a tram saw a car without light following. The car was seen to collide with a stationary car, part of its rear being damaged. A police sergeant, who was on the tram stopped the car, and a medical examination revealed that the drivel’, Mathieson, was drunk. He said that two drinks of wine had been given him by a man at Henderson. Before inflicting a penalty, Mr. Hunt called for a report by the probation officer.
